Akhasheni wine: history, overview of types, how and with what to drink + interesting facts

Akhasheni – Georgian red semi-sweet wine, which is produced in the village of the same name in the Gurjaani region. Vineyards, predominantly of the Saperavi variety, are located on the mountain slopes of Xiv, at an altitude of 500 to 800 meters above sea level. There are heavy rains, so watering the vines is almost not necessary.

History of variety and wine

There is a legend that during the reign of the Georgian king David IV the Builder, a temple named after the great martyr George was erected. One of the days turned out to be hot, the workers decided to relax and drink wine. Suddenly, the glass of one of them fell out of his hands, and the alcohol spilled.

On the morning of the next day, a vine that had broken through was noticed at this place. By order of the king, a vineyard was organized, the variety was given the name Saperavi.

Commercial production of the drink began at the beginning of the XNUMXth century, in a small village of Kakheti.

Due to the high sugar content of the fruit (22%), no artificial sweeteners are used in the winemaking process.

Types of Akhasheni wine

  1. Alaverdi, 13%

    Intense pomegranate. Soft, fruity. Sugary. It smells strongly of fruit. The aftertaste is long. Because of the sweetness, it may not be suitable for desserts.

  2. Badagoni, 10%

    Dark ruby. The taste is fruity, pleasant sweetness, no strong acid. Tart. Intense grape aroma. The aftertaste is soft.

  3. Mildiani, 13%

    Dark red. Fruity, moderately sweet, rich. The aroma intertwines cherry and prune notes. The aftertaste is long-lasting.

  4. Teliani Valley, 12,5%

    Cherry color. The taste is intertwined with hints of blackcurrant, blackberry and partly cherry. Quite tart. Drinks easily. Smells like fruit. The aftertaste is velvety.

  5. Palavani, 12%

    Intense ruby. The taste is harmonious with berry and spicy notes. There is sweetness. Aroma of cherry and blackcurrant, complemented by a slight sharpness. Berries are felt in the long aftertaste.

How and with what to drink Akhasheni

It is better to drink wine young. It is aged from one to four years, which in itself does not affect the taste. But they can be ruined by improper storage. The best place for a drink is the basement.

Chill the wine to 12-14°C before serving.

Akhasheni goes well with red meat, chocolate desserts, cheese and fruit snacks.

Interesting Facts

  1. In 2010, the name Akhasheni was assigned at the legislative level to the locality where it is produced.

  2. Georgians divide wine into white and black. If you look closely, the red will shimmer with black shades.

  3. The only plant in Georgia that has an ISO quality certificate is Badagoni. Alaverdi products have received 32 gold awards and 42 quality marks.
