Air humidity in the apartment: protecting flowers
How to protect indoor plants during the heating season, when the air in the apartment becomes too dry.
Air humidity in the apartment
All methods are reduced to one thing – it is necessary to increase the humidity of the air. By the way, this is important not only for plants. Dry air is also harmful to humans: by drying up mucous membranes, it reduces our protection against seasonal viruses. In this regard, it is even more important to keep indoor plants safe and sound in winter – after all, they are living moisturizers and purifying filters that naturally
So, how you can increase the humidity in the apartment and protect the plants from drying out:
1. Spraying
The simplest, but, alas, short-lived method that requires you to be organized: after all, you need to spray the plants several times a day. It is also necessary to spray water from the spray bottle correctly: in no case direct the jet at the leaves and flowers, you need to spray the air above the plant (at a height of half a meter). However, keep in mind: some plants easily tolerate dry air – most often these are specimens with glossy leathery leaves (for example,
Swamp plants, such as cyperus, by their nature evaporate a lot of moisture, which means they increase the humidity of the air and improve the microclimate.
2. Pot in a pot
To keep the air around the plant moist, place the plant pot on a tray of water or dig in a larger pot filled with wet bulk material (sand, expanded clay, peat). And be sure to keep the bulk filler moist at all times.
3. Marsh plants
These plants live in water, which means that by their nature they evaporate a lot of moisture. Place pots with marsh plants (for example: cyperus, indoor bamboo (pogonaterum), spathiphyllum between other flowers – they will increase the humidity around them and support their thirsty fellows. Just remember to water them regularly – marsh plants feel good only in very wet soil.
Airing does not cancel spraying. Frosty air is no less dry than the air in a heated room.
4. Lush plants
The more the leaf mass of the indoor flower, the more moisture it evaporates. Grow strongly: roicissus birch,
5. Additional evaporation
The best option is a household humidifier. A more economical solution is the most common wide bowl filled with water and placed on a battery. The water will gradually evaporate, improving the microclimate near the windowsill.
Also, don’t forget
Dangerous: ventilation!
When opening windows in frost, remove indoor plants from the windowsill! They can suffer from the cold, and besides, airing is not a substitute for spraying. Frosty air is no less dry than the air in a heated room.
