AI in Polish medical facilities is already a fact

Innovations based on artificial intelligence algorithms are playing an increasingly important role not only in industry, but also in Polish medical institutions – according to the recently published review “AI is not sci-fi”. The publication’s partners include, on the one hand, global giants, and, on the other, promising and thriving Polish startups.

For doctors and nurses, modern solutions are much more than additional work tools, and for patients it is a chance to live longer and improve their health. It is no wonder then that medical facilities oriented at developing and satisfying the health needs of the patient are increasingly turning to innovations based on artificial intelligence.

AI is the future of medicine

Examples of such implementations were presented in the review “AI is not sci-fi”, which has just been released. Importantly, the publication provides not only information about specific solutions, but also about real benefits for patients, a medical facility, medical personnel and, finally, for the entire healthcare system. It also provides guidance for subsequent deployments.

AI in health is not a sphere of plans or dreams. It is a reality and at the same time a great opportunity for more effective treatment of patients and more effective functioning of the health care system. In practice, this means faster and more accurate diagnostics, implementation of appropriate treatment, as well as optimization of resources and costs – notes the initiator of the “AI is not sci-fi” review, Ligia Kornowska, leader of the AI Coalition in Health.

Innovation in practice

A wide range of innovative solutions was presented in the review “AI is not sci-fi”. They include, among others: the RSQ AI application with decision support systems for three types of medical imaging (X-ray, tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) and Radiato.ai – an AI tool supporting the diagnosis of kidney tumors.

Three solutions from Microsoft partners are also presented here. This applies to the software for manual scanning of laboratory preparations offered by CancerCenter.ai, which gives the possibility of creating a high-quality digital image of a laboratory sample and its analysis also with the support of AI. The next two solutions based on Microsoft technology are: iSIL-FFR – a modern and non-invasive method of diagnosing coronary heart disease, developed and implemented by LifeFlow; and ApoQlar’s VSI HoloMedicine® platform that transforms medical images, clinical workflow and medical education into an interactive 2D mixed reality environment based on HoloLensXNUMX glasses.

But that’s not all. Two Abbott solutions were also presented in the “AI is not sci-fi” review. The first is the FreeStyle Libre system for measuring glucose in the interstitial fluid with a sensor, and the cloud-based LibreView system, which provides the physician with an analysis of the data collected by FreeStyle Libre. Abbott’s second solution is Ultreon 1.0 software, which includes algorithms designed by AI for the automatic detection of calcified changes within the coronary vessels.

Three British solutions were also presented as inspiration, including two operating in Poland: the new generation Versius surgical robot by CMR Surgical, Navio and Cori orthopedic robots by Smith & Nephew, as well as one solution used by NHS – Atom5 ™ by Aparito (hybrid and decentralized platform clinical trials, which collects multiple high-frequency data points from video, voice, wearables and ePRO and then analyzes this data in collaboration with a dedicated team of scientists).

The need for modern solutions

The advantage of the “AI is not sci-fi” review is the presentation of data in a condensed and accessible form. The publication aims to disseminate knowledge about the already used AI solutions in Polish health care. It is also an incentive to implement the presented solutions by other medical entities.

Innovation in health cannot be overestimated. The partners we worked with on the ‘AI is not Sci-Fi’ review are setting the direction for change. This trend cannot be ignored. On the contrary, good practice must be fostered – sums up Ligia Kornowska, leader of the AI Coalition in Health.

The review “AI is not sci-fi” was published under the brand name of a team of experts in health in cooperation with the Polish Federation of Hospitals and the AI in Health Coalition. The publication partners are: Abbott, British Embassy, Aparito, ApoQlar, CMR Surgical, Cancer Center, LifeFlow, Microsoft, Radiato.ai, RSQ Technologies, Smith & Nephew and Upmedic.

To be continued … during the webinar

“AI is not sci-fi” has a chance to become a cyclical publication. Meanwhile, more about Polish innovations in health and the review itself will be available during the webinar planned for March 28 this year by Microsoft and wHealth. in hours 13-15 (register today: https://aka.ms/webinarAI).
