The Austrian authorities decided on Sunday to suspend vaccination against Covid-19 with one lot of AstraZeneca after the death of a 49-year-old woman and the occurrence of a pulmonary embolism in the other. The decision was made despite the lack of evidence of a direct link to vaccination.

According to the Federal Office for Healthcare Safety (BASG), the woman died of a blood clotting disorder, while the other, 35, contracted a lung embolism caused by a blood clot.

Both cases occurred in the town of Zwettl in Lower Austria; the women received injections of the same lot of AstraZeneca.

BASG said there is currently no “evidence of a causal link to the vaccine”. Cases of problems with blood clotting have not been previously seen in the studies of AstraZeneca. However, as the relationship cannot be completely ruled out for the time being, the office decided to suspend vaccination with this batch of the preparation.

Let us remind you that this is not the first controversy surrounding the AstraZeneca vaccine. Vaccination was suspended in France in mid-February after 150 health professionals developed flu-like symptoms.
