According to the results of the forensic medicine research, Kamil Durczok, who caused a road accident at the end of July, had not only alcohol in his blood. The journalist was taking a psychotropic drug called nordiazepam.

After the incident on the A1 motorway, involving the drunk Kamil Durczok, there were suspicions that the journalist might have been under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. This research has not been confirmed. It was announced to the public that in addition to 2,6 per mille of alcohol in Durczok’s blood there were trace amounts of nordiazepam. It is a drug with a long half-life (from 36 to 200 hours, depending on the metabolic functions of the liver and kidneys), which means that its effects last for several days after taking the tablet.

How does nordiazepam work?

Nordiazepam (nordazepam) belongs to the group of benzodiazepines. It is used to relieve emotional tension and psychosomatic disorders. It is taken in the case of insomnia and recurrent anxiety that accompany, among others, psychosis. The substance has a sedative, hypnotic and anticonvulsant effect. It weakens muscle tension.

Nordiazepam – side effects

Nordiazepam can cause low blood pressure, headache, dizziness, and increased sleepiness. A large dose, especially in an elderly person, may result in hypotension. Therefore, taking this drug is not recommended for drivers. You should also not combine the tablets with alcohol. Contraindications to the use of nordiazepam are pregnancy and breastfeeding, as the substance crosses the placenta and enters the mother’s milk.

Nordiazepam is not a drug, but it has narcotic properties

Nordiazepam in Poland is available only on prescription. This is due to its potential narcotic properties (when used in high doses). In the list of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, he was classified in group IV-P – with a low risk of addiction. Still, it is among the substances abused for non-medical purposes. Misuse of nordiazepam is frequently detected in people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. Many drivers who cause road traffic accidents have concentrations in their blood that far exceed the therapeutic dose range.

Research conducted in 2014 by scientists from the Department of Anti-Doping Research of the Institute of Sport in Warsaw shows that out of 264 drivers who were driving under the influence of intoxicants, 23 had nordiazepam in their blood.
