Aescin is a medicinal product with anti-edema and anti-inflammatory properties. This drug accelerates the absorption of hematomas and reduces the risk of and appearance in the later postoperative period. Aescin is used prophylactically and therapeutically in the case of edema occurring after injuries and operations. In addition, it is used to treat phlebitis in the legs, varicose veins of the lower extremities and haemorrhoids.
Aescin – action
Aescin is a preparation that protects the walls of blood vessels, which additionally strengthens the capillaries. The active ingredient of Aescin there is escin, which is the main saponin of horse chestnut seeds of the variety Aesculus hippocastanum. Escin reduces the permeability of blood vessel walls, prevents swelling and inflammation. The substance also improves the elasticity and tension of the venous walls, as well as improves microcirculation and strengthens capillaries.
Aescin is for oral use. The drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Active substance Aescin it is excreted through the kidneys and bile ducts.
Aescin – indications
Aescin is used during:
- treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins of the lower extremities and haemorrhoids;
- treating phlebitis of the lower extremities;
- prophylaxis and treatment of hematomas and edema after operations and injuries.

Aescin – contraindications
Even if they exist indications for the use of Aescin it is not always possible to enter it. The main contraindication to the use of the preparation is allergy, i.e. hypersensitivity to the active substance or any component of the drug. Aescin should also not be given to pregnant and breastfeeding women. The drug should also not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Aescin – precautions
Certain diseases and other health-related conditions can prevent you the use of Aescin or is an indication for dosage modification. In certain cases, your doctor may recommend regular check-ups.
If you notice any of the following symptoms after taking this medicine, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Be especially careful if they appear:
- skin infection;
- thrombophlebitis;
- subcutaneous indurations, lumps;
- skin ulcers;
- sharp pain resulting from skin changes that appear;
- sudden swelling of one or both legs;
- heart or kidney failure.
The appearance of the above symptoms may indicate the development of serious diseases that require immediate intervention and treatment. In addition, caution should be exercised when the patient is concomitantly taking anticoagulants – it is then necessary to perform tests to control blood clotting parameters. Patients should also remember to check their kidneys regularly.
In addition, patients should be aware that the use of Aescin will not prevent them from dispensing with preventive measures such as compression stockings, leg bandages or cold compresses. The patient should not forget about the current doctor’s recommendations and still have to follow them. As there are currently no data on the safety of the drug in people under 18 years of age, it should not be administered to patients at this age.
In addition, remember that Aescin contains lactose, therefore people with galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or malabsorption of glucose-galactose should not take the drug. Aescin also contains sunset yellow marked with the symbol E110, which may cause allergic reactions.

Aescin – dosage
Aescin is a medicine available in the form of oral film-coated tablets. It should be used as directed. Do not exceed the recommended doses, because it will not change the effectiveness of the drug, and may adversely affect the health and even threaten the safety of the patient’s life. Should you have any doubts about the dosing of Aescin please consult your doctor.
The dosage is as follows:
- adults: these people should take 2 tablets, i.e. 40 mg of the active ingredient 3 times a day. Aescin should be taken after a meal and washed down with plenty of fluid. The dose may be reduced (as maintenance treatment) after 2-3 months to 2 tablets twice a day.
If the drug is taken by a woman using oral contraceptives, the dose of Aescin can be doubled. In turn, before the surgery, Aescin can be administered prophylactically approx. 16 hours before the planned surgery.
Importantly, there is no need to modify the dose in the elderly. Also remember not to give the drug to children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Aescin – pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnant women should not use medications without consulting a doctor. It is important that, before the first use, the woman explains to her doctor all doubts related to the possible risks and benefits of using a given preparation. Women planning or trying to have a baby should also inform their doctor before starting treatment with this medicine.
In the case of preparatu Aescin it should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Aescin – inne preparaty
Before starting Aescin tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including those without a prescription. Keep in mind that:
- the drug may increase the effect of anticoagulants;
- aminoglycoside antibiotics should not be used in parallel – there is a risk of increasing the toxic effect of aminoglycosides on the kidneys;
- some antibiotics, such as ampicillin, can increase the level of escin in the blood and increase its effect.
Aescin – side effects
Aescin, like any other drug, may cause certain side effects. However, it should be remembered that they will not occur in every patient who uses the medicine, and that the benefits usually outweigh the risks associated with the risks of using the medicine. Side effects with Aescin include:
- headaches;
- dizziness;
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhea;
- stomach discomfort;
- allergic dermatitis, i.e. itching, rash, erythema, urticaria, eczema;
- severe hypersensitivity reactions;
- hypertension;
- fast heart rate (tachycardia);
- genital haemorrhage.
In the event of bleeding or severe hypersensitivity reactions, discontinue use of the drug and consult a physician.
