Aescin is a gel used in family medicine to prevent and treat edema, hematomas and varicose veins. The preparation has an effect on the cardiovascular system, protecting the veins and acting against swelling and inflammation. Aescin is available over the counter.

Indications for use of Aescin
The active substances of Aescin are: diethylamine salicylate, escin, heparin. The drug is used topically in the treatment of injuries (bruises, sprains, extensive traumatic hematomas), local inflammations with or without edema, inflammation of the veins of the lower limbs, hematomas and edema after surgical procedures after injuries, spinal pain with symptoms of compression of the spinal nerves.
Dosage: usually 3-5 times a day, externally, topically to the skin. You should spread a thin layer of the gel, and then rub it into the affected area and its surroundings. The area of skin covered with the gel should exceed the area of the injury. The massage preceding the application of the gel accelerates the absorption of the active substance.
Aescin and contraindications and warnings
Contraindications to the use of Aescin gel are:
- hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
- chronic kidney disease or failure,
- I trimester of pregnancy,
- do not use on the chest area while breastfeeding,
- do not use on mucous membranes, open wounds and in cases of skin necrosis and on irradiated skin areas.
Aescin – warnings:
- Aescin can cause allergic reactions (possible delayed-type reactions).
- Use of the preparation in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and breastfeeding only after consulting a doctor and only if absolutely necessary.
Aescin with other drugs: no data on interactions with other drugs.
Aescin and side effects:
Very rarely, itching, hives and a burning sensation may occur at the site of application of the preparation. These symptoms usually disappear by themselves.
