Start COVID-19 vaccine Frequently asked questions Where can I get vaccinated? Check if you can get vaccinated

Parents are concerned that their child may experience adverse vaccine reactions as a result of the COVID-19 vaccination. There is actually something to be afraid of? And are there any contraindications for vaccinating children against coronavirus? Dr. Lidia Stopyra – infectious diseases specialist and pediatrician – explains for MedTvoiLokony.

  1. In Poland, it is already possible to vaccinate children from 19 years of age against COVID-12. Some parents, however, fear that they will develop severe or serious NOPs

Agnieszka Mazur-Puchała, Medonet: Parents are concerned that vaccinated children may develop serious or severe adverse vaccination reactions. Is this a myth we can debunk?

Dr. Lidia Stopyra, specialist in infectious diseases and paediatrics: Definitely yes. But first, we must take into account the definition of the NOP that is valid in our country. The fact is that everything that happens in the first four weeks after vaccination must be reported by the doctor as an NOP. Only later is verification carried out to determine whether there was a causal relationship with the vaccination or not. For example, if someone has been hit by a car and something has happened to him, you must also report it as NOP when the incident occurred four weeks after vaccination. And now, if we take into account such statistics, then, of course, some NOPs among children will certainly be reported. However, these events will not be related in any way to the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine itself.

Speaking of NOP not in terms of a definition, but more about what could actually be the result of a vaccine, it is actually only an extremely rare allergic reaction that is involved. But this is something that can happen after every meal, too, so we expose ourselves to this shock every day, regardless of vaccinations. Besides, there are no theoretical premises or practical reports that something else would be happening among children.

Are there any contraindications for vaccination against COVID-19 in children 12 – 16 years of age? Allergy, maybe some disease?

The only contraindication is anaphylaxis after the previous dose of the vaccine or a strong allergic reaction after any of the ingredients of the preparation. At the same time, Pfizer has such a composition that its components are very rarely found in other substances. So far, we have already administered millions of doses of Pfizer in Poland. People who would experience anaphylactic shock after the first dose of the vaccine are actually isolated cases nationwide. We have a greater risk of a severe allergic reaction when we eat an egg or when we are stung by a bee.
