This ailment – as the name suggests – concerns the pupil and consists in its permanent expansion.
The reason is the destruction of the parasympathetic nerves supplying the pupil – the opening through which a beam of light enters the eye. The symptom may affect one or both eyes.
Adie’s pupil occurs most often as a result of viral or bacterial infections and accompanying inflammation within the autonomic nervous system. Usually, pupil dilation is accompanied by other related symptoms – in particular, disappearance of deep tendon reflexes and excessive sweating. In neurology, this syndrome is called Adie syndrome or Holmes-Adie syndrome.
Treatment Adie’s pupil consists in the use of corrective lenses and drops that narrow the pupil.
