Actifed is a drug used for symptomatic treatment of inflammation of the upper respiratory tract with swelling of the nasal mucosa, runny nose and cough. Actifed is a combination medicine containing a morphine derivative that has an antitussive effect. The drug is a syrup and can be obtained without a prescription.

ACTION
Actifed is a combined preparation containing a morphine derivative with a central antitussive effect, a sympathomimetic amine and an H1 receptor antagonist.
Actifed – indications and dosage
Actifed is a syrup recommended to treat the symptoms of:
- inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, accompanied by swelling of the nose, runny nose and cough in adults and children over 7 years of age.
Drug dosage
Actifed is in the form of a syrup and is intended for oral administration. Use the drug as directed and do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Adults and children after 12 years of age 10 ml 3-4 × / d.
- Children 7-12. years of age 5 ml 3-4 × / day.
Actifed and contraindications
There are the following contraindications for taking Actifed:
- allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
- cough due to bronchial asthma or with large amounts of mucus,
- respiratory failure or the threat of its occurrence,
- severe arterial hypertension,
- unstable angina,
- use of MAO inhibitors (in parallel or within the last 2 weeks),
- cystic fibrosis,
- for use by children up to 1 years of age.
Actifed – warnings
- If symptoms persist for more than 3 days (despite taking the syrup), or are accompanied by fever, headache, rash, consult a doctor.
- It is not recommended to take the drug during or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with MAO inhibitors.
- You should not take drugs that depress the central nervous system (e.g. hypnotic, sedative).
- Do not consume alcohol during treatment with the preparation.
- Patients with: hyperthyroidism, prostatic hyperplasia, glaucoma, heart disease, increased intraocular pressure, diabetes, hypertension, hepatic insufficiency or planning pregnancy should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
- Tell your doctor about other medications you are taking.
- Pregnant women are allowed to take the drug only after consulting a doctor, when the benefit of the mother outweighs the risk to the baby.
- Breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
- Do not drive / operate motor vehicles while taking the preparation.
Actifed with other medications
- You should not take Actifed together with MAO inhibitors, also within 2 weeks of stopping taking them, as this may cause: collapse, coma, increased blood pressure or high fever.
- The use of Actifed with mucosal vasoconstrictor drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, appetite suppressants, and psychotropic drugs similar to amphetamines may lead to an increase in blood pressure.
- Concomitant use of drugs that lower blood pressure, such as bretylium, betanidine, guanethidine, debrisoquine, methyldopa, and alpha and beta-adrenergic blockers, may reduce their effect due to the interaction of the ludoephedrine in Actifed.
Actifed – side effects
Taking Actifed syrup may cause the following side effects:
- somnolence,
- dizziness,
- fatigue,
- sleep disturbances,
- hallucinations (rare)
- acute respiratory failure,
- bronchospasm
- increased heart rate (tachycardia)
- constipation
- diarrhea
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- urinary retention (in men)
- dry mouth and nasopharynx
- rash,
- itching
