Actifed on inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Composition and dosage

Actifed is a drug used for symptomatic treatment of inflammation of the upper respiratory tract with swelling of the nasal mucosa, runny nose and cough. Actifed is a combination medicine containing a morphine derivative that has an antitussive effect. The drug is a syrup and can be obtained without a prescription.

ACTION

Actifed is a combined preparation containing a morphine derivative with a central antitussive effect, a sympathomimetic amine and an H1 receptor antagonist.

Actifed – indications and dosage

Actifed is a syrup recommended to treat the symptoms of:

  1. inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, accompanied by swelling of the nose, runny nose and cough in adults and children over 7 years of age.

Drug dosage

Actifed is in the form of a syrup and is intended for oral administration. Use the drug as directed and do not exceed the recommended dose.

  1. Adults and children after 12 years of age 10 ml 3-4 × / d.
  2. Children 7-12. years of age 5 ml 3-4 × / day.

Actifed and contraindications

There are the following contraindications for taking Actifed:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. cough due to bronchial asthma or with large amounts of mucus,
  3. respiratory failure or the threat of its occurrence,
  4. severe arterial hypertension,
  5. unstable angina,
  6. use of MAO inhibitors (in parallel or within the last 2 weeks),
  7. cystic fibrosis,
  8. for use by children up to 1 years of age.

Actifed – warnings

  1. If symptoms persist for more than 3 days (despite taking the syrup), or are accompanied by fever, headache, rash, consult a doctor.
  2. It is not recommended to take the drug during or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with MAO inhibitors.
  3. You should not take drugs that depress the central nervous system (e.g. hypnotic, sedative).
  4. Do not consume alcohol during treatment with the preparation.
  5. Patients with: hyperthyroidism, prostatic hyperplasia, glaucoma, heart disease, increased intraocular pressure, diabetes, hypertension, hepatic insufficiency or planning pregnancy should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
  6. Tell your doctor about other medications you are taking.
  7. Pregnant women are allowed to take the drug only after consulting a doctor, when the benefit of the mother outweighs the risk to the baby.
  8. Breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
  9. Do not drive / operate motor vehicles while taking the preparation.

Actifed with other medications

  1. You should not take Actifed together with MAO inhibitors, also within 2 weeks of stopping taking them, as this may cause: collapse, coma, increased blood pressure or high fever.
  2. The use of Actifed with mucosal vasoconstrictor drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, appetite suppressants, and psychotropic drugs similar to amphetamines may lead to an increase in blood pressure.
  3. Concomitant use of drugs that lower blood pressure, such as bretylium, betanidine, guanethidine, debrisoquine, methyldopa, and alpha and beta-adrenergic blockers, may reduce their effect due to the interaction of the ludoephedrine in Actifed.

Actifed – side effects

Taking Actifed syrup may cause the following side effects:

  1. somnolence,
  2. dizziness,
  3. fatigue,
  4. sleep disturbances,
  5. hallucinations (rare)
  6. acute respiratory failure,
  7. bronchospasm
  8. increased heart rate (tachycardia)
  9. constipation
  10. diarrhea
  11. nausea,
  12. vomiting,
  13. urinary retention (in men)
  14. dry mouth and nasopharynx
  15. rash,
  16. itching
