Acidum Folicum is known by its common name folic acid, i.e. vitamin B9. It is a compound that is needed by every cell in our body for proper development. Supplementation with folic acid is recommended especially for pregnant women, as this compound prevents fetal neural tube defects. What are other indications for the use of the drug? How to properly supplement folic acid?
Acidum Folicum – the role of folic acid in the body
Folic acid, or vitamin B9, is a compound that is extremely important for the proper functioning of the human body. Folic acid is involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids from which DNA is formed. This means that folic acid affects the growth and function of all cells that make up the human body. Additionally, folic acid, accompanied by vitamin B12, is involved in the formation of erythrocytes, i.e. red blood cells. Without the proper concentration of folic acid in the body, we are exposed to anemia, i.e. anemia. Many scientists also claim that folic acid protects the body against cancer. Among other things, with proper supplementation of folic acid, the risk of cervical cancer is reduced.
Acidum Folicum – symptoms and effects of folic acid deficiency
Incorrect concentration of folic acid in the human body seriously affects its functioning. First of all, folate deficiency causes anemia, osteoporosis, degenerative disorders and cardiovascular diseases. It is often indicated that folic acid deficiency may cause cancer. The use of folic acid is especially important in women who are expecting a baby. Folic acid deficiency can cause neural tube defects in the baby. This defect can cause spina bifida, anencephaly, and the formation of cerebrospinal hernias.
Acidum Folicum – indications and contraindications
The indication for the use of Acidum Folium is the prevention and treatment of folic acid deficiency, which may occur in the course of such diseases as: chronic diseases associated with blood hemolysis, megaloblastic anemia or alcoholism. Folic acid deficiency also occurs in cases of extreme malnutrition or after a period of dialysis or the use of drugs such as barbiturates, primidone, cyclosporine, sulfasalazine, methotrexate or trimethoprim. Women who decided to take oral contraceptives also complain about folic acid deficiency. Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation is a contraindication to the use of Acidum Folium. Particular precautions should be taken when using Acidum Folium in people with cancer.
Acidum Folicum – correct dosage
Acidum Folium should be used in accordance with the recommendations of the doctor who proposed treatment with this preparation. According to the instructions in the package leaflet, the correct dose of Acidum Folium is between 10 mg and 45 mg per day. The dose to replenish the tissue reserves is 10 mg to 20 mg. When used in children, the dose of folic acid ranges from 10 mg to 15 mg per day. The duration of treatment with this preparation depends on the patient’s reaction to the drug Acidum Folium and on the results of laboratory tests.
Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on side effects and dosage as well as information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult your doctor or pharmacist, as each drug used improperly is a threat to your life or health.
