Acenocoumarol – action, indications, contraindications, dosage, side effects

Acenocoumarol is an oral anticoagulant drug used in the treatment and prevention of arterial and venous complications of thromboembolism.

The composition of the drug Acenocoumarol

The active substance in Acenocoumarol is an organic compound of the same name (acenocoumarol).

Action of the drug Acenocoumarol

The medicine thins the blood and inhibits the clotting factors called ‘prothrombin syndrome’, thereby reducing blood clotting. Acenocoumarol acts as a vitamin K antagonist, which is involved in blood coagulation.

Indications for the use of the drug Acenocoumarol

Acenocoumarol is administered to patients with arterial and venous complications in thromboembolism.

Acenocoumarol is also administered prophylactically after surgery to reduce blood clotting and prevent clots in patients who are immobilized for long periods.

Acenocoumarol is also used prophylactically in patients with congenital antithrombin III deficiency.

Contraindications to the use of the drug Acenocoumarol

Contraindication to taking Acenocoumarol is haemorrhagic diathesis, active or healed gastric or duodenal ulcer disease, liver or kidney disorders, and unexplained bleeding after cuts or surgeries (these may indicate problems with blood clotting).

The drug Acenocoumarol cannot be used by patients who are allergic to the active substance or any of the auxiliary ingredients of the preparation.

Acenocoumarol must not be used during pregnancy. It is not advisable for women to take this medication while breastfeeding.

Dosage of the drug Acenocoumarol

Acenocoumarol should be used strictly according to the doctor’s instructions. If the blood clotting level drops too quickly, it can lead to serious problems, so it is important to carefully select the dose based on the patient’s blood test results and monitor their condition.

Side effects when using the drug Acenocoumarol

Acenocoumarol can cause nose and gum bleeding, blood in the urine and stools, skin bruising, heavy and long periods, vomiting blood, and coughing bloody sputum.

Other side effects of using this preparation (appearing relatively rarely) include: hair loss, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, allergic skin reactions and liver damage.

Acenocoumarol interactions with other drugs

Acenocoumarol may have undesirable interactions with many other drugs, increasing or decreasing its concentration in the blood. Therefore, before starting treatment with Acenocoumarol, inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including those taken without a prescription.

Acenocoumarol may interact with medications used to treat cardiac arrhythmias, some antibiotics, vibratami, sulfonamides, oral medications used to treat diabetes, thyroid hormones, and anabolic steroids.

Additional notes

Acenocoumarol, like other anticoagulants, should be taken at the same time of the day. If for any reason you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, a double dose should not be used to top up the medicine.

Alcohol should not be consumed during therapy with Acenocoumarol, as it may increase the effect of the drug.

Acenocoumarol should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
