Historical information

The Abrau-Dyurso farm was founded in 1870 in the village of the same name in the Krasnodar Territory. The unique climatic conditions of the area and proximity to the sea are the best suited for growing grapes. The first agronomist of the farm, Franz Geyduk, brought varietal vines from Germany, which were planted on the slopes of the mountains surrounding the village of Abrau.

New wines received universal recognition at an exhibition held in Yalta in 1884. The products of the farm were highly appreciated by experts and won several gold medals. For a number of years, the estate was headed by Prince Lev Golitsyn, who stood at the origins of Crimean winemaking. Thanks to his efforts, in 1896 the factory produced the first batch of champagne.

A huge contribution to the development of technology was made by the French champagne player Victor Dravigny. He managed to bring Abrau-Durso champagne to the international level. During the years of terror after the revolution, Dravigny saved the economy from destruction. In the 20s, the production of champagne resumed, and in Soviet times the village became the center of winemaking throughout the country. During the period of the fight against drunkenness in Abrau-Durso, about half of the vineyards were cut down.

In 2000, the plant experienced a rebirth. The company was acquired by SVL, whose management set the task of reviving the worldwide fame of the brand. In recent years, the farm’s products have won more than fifty medals at Russian and foreign competitions. “Abrau-Durso” is one of the major centers of wine tourism.

Production features

The favorable climate of the area where Abrau-Dyurso is located is ideal for growing grapes. The combination of bright sun and sea winds gives the berries a specific taste. The grapes on the farm are harvested ahead of time, before they become too sweet. Taste differences are achieved by mixing different varieties. The juice of the first extraction becomes the raw material for the production of sparkling wine.

Champagne at the factory is made in two ways. Expensive varieties are made by the champagne method, which consists of many stages. The aging period for this wine is at least three years. Bottles are stored in multi-kilometer cellars that can simultaneously accommodate about 7 million units of products. Most of the procedures in the factory are done manually.

“Russian champagne”, designed for the mass consumer, is made according to the Sharma method. Secondary fermentation takes place in huge stainless steel tanks. This practice is used by all countries producing sparkling wine, and in Abrau-Durso it has been used since the middle of the 20th century. The bottling line at the plant is automated. About XNUMX million bottles roll off production lines every year.
