Abortion in our country is a taboo subject. It is allowed in two cases: when the pregnancy comes from rape and when the pregnancy threatens the health and life of the mother. Over the third case – when the fetus is severely damaged – there is a stormy discussion between opponents and supporters of abortion. One of the methods of terminating a pregnancy is pharmacological abortion, i.e. abortion pills, which are illegal in Poland.

According to doctors, every third pregnancy ends in spontaneous miscarriage. Often this happens so early in pregnancy that the woman does not even know she has conceived and treats the bleeding as normal menstruation.

Abortion pills have the effect that the embryo is expelled from the body. This is accompanied by uterine contractions, pain and bleeding. The substances contained in the tablets block progesterone receptors. This hormone keeps the pregnancy going. If it is missing, there is a miscarriage, known as an artificial miscarriage, because it is caused not by nature but by the ingestion of a chemical substance.

Access to gynecological care will be facilitated by having a medical subscription for women. Thanks to it, a woman gains access to professional medical care and it is much easier for her to obtain medical advice, including a gynecologist.

The dosage and method of taking the tablets (orally or vaginally) can be found in the instructions for use. This should be strictly adhered to. Despite this, sometimes the expulsion of the embryo does not take place. The dosing can then be repeated after a few days.

A pharmacological abortion has the same symptoms as a natural miscarriage. The doctor will not recognize the cause in the event that medical attention is needed, or confirmation of termination of pregnancy. A pregnancy test is reliable only after 4 weeks, earlier it may show the existence of pregnancy.

Abortion pills up to 9 weeks are the most effective (98% of them have a miscarriage). The older the pregnancy is, the less likely the pills are to work. Nevertheless, pharmacological abortion is performed until the 12th week of pregnancy (approx. 70% effectiveness).

If you have any doubts about how to use abortion pills and what should worry you, arrange a gynecological consultation online via the halodoctor.pl portal.

The side effects are generally harmless: fever, chills, diarrhea and vomiting, feeling sick. Heavy bleeding requires medical intervention. The pain of a pharmacological abortion is similar to a painful period – if the pregnancy is not advanced. Note here, do not take abortion tablets above the week of pregnancy indicated in the package leaflet.

A pharmacological abortion must be performed in the presence of a trusted person so that in the event of adverse effects, you can count on help (taking you to a doctor).

Contraindications are:

  1. unconfirmed pregnancy,
  2. anemia in a woman,
  3. Ectopic pregnancy,
  4. state of intoxication,
  5. no access to a doctor (in case of complications).
