The long-awaited barbecue season has finally begun. Evening meetings with friends over grilled specialties can effectively spoil tiny, inconspicuous creatures that desperately want to mark their presence – mosquitoes – thanks to these companions we always forget about summer rest and relaxation. A way to scare away mosquitoes are some plants that, thanks to the aromas they emit, create a kind of “mosquito net” in the garden. Fans of evening parties on the terrace or in the garden gazebo should take advantage of our presentation and plant plants in the garden that hate mosquitoes just like us.

Mosquitoes are a nightmare every summer. They can effectively spoil our mood and atmosphere not only through annoying buzzing and itchy blisters. They can often cause allergic reactions and the red, raised spots after the bite are often painful and must be immediately treated with a soothing and painkiller. It is hardly surprising that we are constantly looking for effective ways to eliminate mosquitoes from our environment. While various types of insecticides that we use at home are quite effective, getting rid of these bloodsucking insects from our garden territory is not so easy. However, we are able to spend warm summer evenings peacefully if we plant the following plants in the garden:

  • Plectranthus (called the mosquito) – a plant that is characterized by two-color leaves – green and white. Plecrantus leaves contain very intense, aromatic essential oils that perfectly repel intrusive insects.
  • myrt – an evergreen, elegant, ornamental plant. It has small leaves but numerous white flowers. Sometimes small, edible berries may appear on it. Myrtle gives off a very specific smell that mosquitoes hate.
  • Surmia (catalpa)- It is a tree that can reach several meters in height. It has large, decorative leaves and white flowers that appear in late July and early August. The tree contains aromatic oils that repel mosquitoes.
  • catnipa – plant reaching up to 35-40 cm in height. It blooms for quite a long time – from July to September. The plant forms dense thickets that emit an unbearable smell for mosquitoes.
  • Basil — there are different varieties of this plant, but they all have one thing in common – they are very aromatic. The smell of basil repels mosquitoes effectively and for a long time.
  • sundews — these flowers are probably the strongest against mosquitoes. Sundews on the tops of their flowers secrete substances that attract mosquitoes. In this way, the attracted insect sits on the flower and is then glued with a sticky liquid. After a while, the flower closes and secretes formic acid, which dissolves the insect, and the sundew flowers absorb its protein.

Pay attention to:

In order for the fight against mosquitoes to be more effective, check if there are open water tanks in your garden, because mosquitoes love such places and willingly breed in them. For example, ponds can be equipped with cascades or aerators that will create constant water movements, or let fish feed on mosquito larvae into the pond. Let’s try to cover or remove water, a puddle that lingers somewhere in the garden nooks and crannies. In this way, we can reduce the number of mosquitoes in our garden.
