Scientists from Lisbon have developed a drug against the bacterium helicobacter pylori, which is responsible for many dangerous diseases of the digestive system. The drug invented by the Portuguese is in the form of a vaccine.
“The research on a substance that prevents the development of helicobacter pylori, which has been carried out for six years, has brought visible results in laboratory studies. Therapy with the use of the new vaccine resulted in an improvement in the health of the individuals subjected to it “- said Prof. Cecilia Calado from the research team.
According to the Portuguese scientist, the new drug against helicobacter pylori works against several varieties of this bacterium and is currently being prepared for a series of clinical trials.
“There is no measure on the market today that could combat the diversity of strains of this bacterium. Meanwhile, our invention is universal. The product, which may be available for sale in the coming months, guarantees immunity to the American, African and Asian strains of helicobacter pylori to a person vaccinated in Europe, ”assured Cecilia Calado.
The drug, developed by a team of scientists from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Engineering at the Catholic University of Lisbon, allows you to completely eliminate the presence of helicobacter pylori in the stomach. The bacterium dies with the increasing number of antibodies produced by vaccination.
Helicobacter pylori is a rod-type bacterium. It is responsible for many serious diseases of the digestive system, including gastric cancer, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric mucosa lymphoma.
