Drowning in Poland – June 2020. «Black Saturday»
Police said that so far in June as many as 48 drownings have been reported. Eight people died on Saturday alone.
If we compare this data with the statistics from last year, the situation seems to be better now. In June 2019, over 100 people drowned in Poland.
Let us take into account, however, that the weather in recent weeks was not conducive to rest by the water – storms and hailstorms passed through Poland, and the temperatures were not at all the highest. In addition, many people still avoid beaches due to the threat of coronavirus.
For these reasons, there may be less drowning, but after “Black Saturday” you can see that this holiday may end with a dramatic balance, because Poles will only move to the lakes and the coast en masse.
The most common causes of drowning in Poland
The police say that 2019 people drowned in 456. The vast majority of the victims were men – according to the data, 407 men and 49 women died in the water last year.
The police also made available data on the age of the victims. Most of them (216) are people over 50. There were 31 drownings in the 50-2019 age group in 132, and 19 in the 30-70 age group. In the previous year, 29 children under the age of 18 also died as a result of drowning.
Most tragic accidents happen at lakes and rivers.
How does drowning happen? – Bravado and charging are a common cause of accidents at the bathing beach – Sławomir Dmoch, a WOPR rescuer told Medonet. Unfortunately, dangerous situations very often occur after alcohol. In 2019, as many as 98 people consumed alcohol before drowning.
Many accidents happen in unguarded bathing areas, as well as in places where swimming bans are in force. Unfortunately, some people do not respect the rules and risk losing their health and life. – People swim far from the shores, choose reservoirs too deep and overestimate their abilities. And you can drown in a small amount of water – explains the lifeguard.
