A story of beauty: beauty discoveries you didn’t know about

Did you know that the world’s first moisturizer was invented in the 30th century, and the first beauty salon opened only in the XNUMXs of the last century? WDay.ru will tell you about these and other discoveries.

The first moisturizer – 1911

In 1911, Beiersdorf owner Oskar Troplowitz developed the world’s first long-lasting moisturizer. It was based on a water-oil emulsion. Prior to this discovery, all cosmetics were based on fats, which significantly reduced the lifespan of cosmetics. The new cream was named Nivea (from the Latin word nivius – “snow-white”). The creators managed to keep the formula for its manufacture secret for a long time, only a few years later it became the basis for similar creams.

Opening of a beauty salon – 1930

For the first time, the doors of beauty salons were opened in London by the famous Helena Rubinstein. This lady gave her clients the chance to receive competent professional care. She also made individual diets for them and invented firming massage for body.

Thanks to Elizabeth Arden, beauty salons have appeared in America. She opened the world’s first SPA salon with Hollywood nutritionist Gaylord Hauser.

Late 60s – highlighter appears on the set

Retro make-up is becoming popular – these are even and voluminous arrows, pale lips, pearlescent shadows. And most importantly, it is no longer fashionable to powder the face from the heart – dense powders are replaced with lighter textures that let light through. This is how the skin looks livelier – on the set Vedic Max Factor first used Silver Stone # 2 illuminating powder – it was she who later used Marlene Dietrich to make her face oval shine. By the way, the invention of the cream highlighter is also connected with it – once the photographer Joseph von Sternberg, in order to narrow the diva’s nose, took out a bottle of silver paint and drew a line from the bridge of the nose to the tip – in the photo the nose looked more graceful.

Anti-wrinkle remedy – 1960-70

Scientists have understood one of the causes of skin aging. She became a lack of collagen. At this time, fish collagen, a biologically active component, was discovered in Poland. It was produced by the Polish company Inventia. It has entered the composition of many cosmetics. However, the formula of the creams was simple, and the components did little to cope with their tasks. Therefore, in a short time, the action of such funds was aimed exclusively at combating fine wrinkles.

Anti-aging cosmetics – 1980

At this time, the efforts of scientists were spent on creating a unique formula for preserving the youthfulness of the skin. Cosmetology returned to pharmacies, and brands began to invest huge amounts of money in setting up their own research laboratories.

The first anti-aging liposome creams appeared in 1983. As conceived by their creators, liposomes had to overcome the epidermal barrier, delivering active elements to the skin. However, later this technique turned out to be ineffective. And then the American dermatologist Albert Klingman from the University of Philadelphia proposed the concept of Cosmeceutical – “cosmeceuticals”. It meant products with complex formulas. These drugs are considered to be the most effective.

Fighting Free Radicals – 1990

By the end of the XNUMXth century, a boom in antioxidants began – means to fight free radicals, by that time already recognized as a factor in skin aging. Thanks to this discovery, the formulations of creams were filled with new substances, for example, vitamin C – the main opponent of aging.

Organic cosmetics fashion – 2000.

Laboratory experiments in the field of cosmetology have become the main stage in the creation of cosmetics. Cosmetology, despite its outstanding achievements, began to return to nature: natural and organic lines of skin care products were created. Naturally, even in antiquity, cosmetics were a priori natural – so now no discovery has happened. On the contrary, marketing makes us think that by buying a product of a high-tech industry, on the creation of which an army of cosmetologists has worked, we are getting closer to nature.

Multifunctional tools – 2010

Now there is an acute trend for cosmetics that can perform many functions at once – for example, whitening and moisturizing serums. Face sticks – mask, even out tone, moisturize and protect from the sun. Pioneers in this direction are Bobby Brown, Nars, Chanel.

Korean influence – since 2015

Masks, patches under the eyes – now a very strong Korean influence on the cosmetics industry, both in the form factor (all these funny masks-apples, peaches and carrots), and in the ingredients – pearls, algae, collagen, hyaluronic acid. Even the BB cream, without which it is difficult to imagine at least one of today’s cosmetic bags, came to us from Korea – and European brands had to adapt to their Asian colleagues.
