A stamp on citizenship in a child’s birth certificate: put, why you need it

The stamp of citizenship on a birth certificate is voluntary, but there are circumstances in which its presence is necessary. With rare exceptions, this procedure is free of charge and you can do it on the day you apply.

Why does a child need a citizenship stamp

This mark in the documents of the baby legally appeared in 2007. Accordingly, the obligatory insert in the certificate was canceled. The decree states that minors born after February 2, 2002, as proof of their citizenship, can have a mark about it in their birth certificate.

Citizenship stamp on birth certificate may be required when crossing the border

If the baby already has a Russian or foreign passport, then he does not need an additional mark. In other cases, it is better to spend 1 day on this procedure. You may need a mark:

  • if you happen to issue a certificate for maternity capital;
  • for registration at the place of residence;
  • on the border with a state that provides Russians with a visa-free regime;
  • when applying for a Russian or foreign passport.

If the baby was born on the territory of another state where he was denied citizenship, and at least one of his parents or guardians has Russian, the mark is required. This seal is required if both parents or the only one are foreign citizens, but the baby was born in Russia. The situation is the same with parents who do not have citizenship at all.

To mark on the document, you must contact the Office for Migration at the place of registration of the baby or parents. In a foreign state, this is done by a consulate or a diplomatic mission of the Russian Federation.

To resolve the issue in Russia, parents can apply to the Office with passports and a certificate and declare their desire to make this mark. After checking their documents, they will be asked to fill out an application. The procedure is free, but if the baby was not born in Russia, and 1 of the parents is a foreigner, you will have to pay a consular fee – USD 65.

If one of the parents applies, he must provide the passport of the second and a marriage certificate.

If the baby was born before February 2, 2002, the registration procedure will be more complicated. You should first clarify the set of necessary documents if the baby is born outside the Russian Federation, he has only one of the parents or his representatives have citizenship of another country.

The procedure for stating citizenship for a minor in an ordinary case is simple and free. It is advisable to do it in order to avoid complications in the procedures where it is needed. If both parents are Russians and the baby was born after 2002, the mark is put in 1 day and free of charge.
