A Spanish cheese breaks for the second consecutive year the Guinness record for the most expensive in the world
The luxury does not understand categories, and sometimes even foods that a priori may seem simpler are capable of reaching astronomical figures, as has happened in the “Cabrales Cheese Contest”, a popular contest held in the Asturian town of Arenas de Cabrales, which every August for 51 years has put on its best clothes to taste and reward the best in the area.
For the second year in a row, the winning piece It has also won the title of the most expensive cheese in the world according to the “Guinness World Records”, with a price of 20.500€ for two kilos of cheese -or what is the same, € 10.250 per kilo-, an amount that also exceeds last year’s winner, which was auctioned for a total of 14.500 euros.
La Arangas cheese factory has been in charge of producing the product, after several bids and competing with fifteen other establishments, the place that managed to get hold of the cheese was “El Llagar de Colloto”, a well-known restaurant in Oviedo where events of all kinds are also held that did not hesitate to disburse that amount in order to support the crafts of the area and, incidentally, attract the odd new customer to your premises under this claim.
Although they have not yet given statements, we are convinced that they will choose to ration it in order to be able to enjoy it as long as possible (as they also did last year), in fact, those who won the title last year chose to pack the empty a part. For its part, Jéssica López, president of the Protected Designation of Origin, has shown his enthusiasm for the half century of history of this contest, whose recognition increases every year.
A luxury for the most exquisite palates
With the passage of time, cheese has gone from being a food associated with the rural world to a real delicacy for the most demanding. The Cabrales, although it is not the most difficult to produce, yes that has some peculiarities, for example, the type of milk used, since its production area is limited to the council of Cabrales and the towns of Cáraves, Oceño and Rozagás. In addition, its maturation process takes place in the natural caves located in the Picos de Europa.
However, it is not the only one capable of reaching astronomical figures. On the one hand we find the Pulé cheese in the Belgrade area whose price has reached over € 1.000 / kilo; And it is not surprising, since to make it the milk of a donkey that only grows in the Balkans is used. Others of the most precious are the moose, from the milk of the Swedish moose that can only be obtained from May to September and that costs around € 900 / kilo; or the Long Clawson’s Stilton Gold, with a figure of € 750 / kilo and gold nuggets in its crust.
