The Whole Truth About Teeth Whitening
Advertising suggests that a snow-white smile is exactly what a person needs. Representatives of the opposite sex will pay attention only to the owner of such teeth, and after bleaching your life will become better. The videos also tell about the means to achieve the cherished goal – they offer either whitening toothpaste, or chewing gum, or compact and modern sets for self-whitening. It would seem that one can rejoice, because now there is no need to go to the dentist. However, it is not. Cleaning, and even more so teeth whitening, is a very responsible procedure, if done incorrectly, you can forget not only about a snow-white smile, but also about a smile in general. How, without harm to your own health, to find the cherished healthy snow-white smile? We talk about this with a doctor dental hygienist Tatiana Eduardovna Mumortseva.
– What determines the color of the teeth?
– In addition to genetic factors, food and bad habits play an important role: food colors, coffee, cigarettes – all this affects the color of the enamel.
– From the point of view of hygiene, do you need to somehow additionally clean your teeth?
– Once every six months, even if you follow all the rules for caring for the oral cavity, it is necessary to perform professional teeth cleaning – that is, remove all deposits that have accumulated on the surface. They are both soft – a variety of plaque, and hard – the so-called tartar. But these are only superficial procedures that practically do not change the color of the teeth. And to change the color of the teeth, whitening is already required, that is, a chemical effect on the enamel of the tooth.
– What types of whitening are there?
– There is professional whitening. It is usually performed in dental clinics using special equipment. Whitening is carried out in different ways, therefore it has several subspecies.
Mechanical whitening – teeth whitening using a special nozzle on the teeth, into which a mixture of cleaning powder and air is supplied under pressure.
Ultrasonic whitening is one of the most gentle methods. It is quite effective and does little harm to the tooth.
Chemical whitening, very intense and effective, but can only be used on absolutely healthy teeth and should be performed in a dental clinic under the supervision of a hygienist doctor.
Laser whitening is simple and quick, but often expensive.
Photo whitening is suitable even for sensitive teeth, but often gives unnatural results, therefore it is not used very often.
In our dentistry, whitening is carried out in three stages: ultrasonic whitening, Air Flow and polishing, with the application of fluoride preparations. After the performed whitening procedure, the doctor will definitely prescribe individual hygiene products that will have a supportive effect and keep your smile snow-white for as long as possible.
— What about the various whitening products sold in pharmacies and stores: toothpastes, special gels, chewing gums? What do you say to those who whiten their teeth at home?
– Those who decided to save money on teeth whitening and carry out this procedure at home should be prepared for the fact that it will be ineffective and rather dangerous. Typically, these products increase the sensitivity of the teeth. Damage to the gums can also occur, which often leads to periodontitis and gingivitis in the future. I would not even consider chewing gums as whitening products. Whitening in every sense of the word can only be performed by a dentist. As for whitening kits, there are usually substances in a low concentration, insufficient for high-quality whitening, but it is enough to change the microflora of the mouth. And with careless use, you can damage the mucous membrane (burn the gums). So I do not recommend using household bleaching.
– How does the whitening itself take place? Is the top layer of enamel peeled off?
– Of course not. It is possible to draw some analogy with hydrogen peroxide bleaching of hair. In the case of teeth, approximately the same happens, because either carbamide-peroxide systems (less traumatic for enamel) or peroxide systems are used.
– Are there any contraindications for whitening?
– Certainly, like any medical manipulation. First of all, it is a congenital hypersensitivity of the teeth. Whitening is not indicated for pregnant and lactating women. The procedure is not performed in the presence of numerous open cavities. It should be borne in mind that if there are many fillings and crowns on the front teeth, then after whitening everything will have to be redone – otherwise the contrast of shades will be noticeable. But if a person is already tuned in to re-prosthetics, then it is more advisable to first whiten his teeth.
– Are there any age restrictions?
– In principle, there is no rigid framework, but it is recommended to carry out the procedure starting from the age of 18-20. Most often, women of 25-45 years old are bleached in our clinic, to a lesser extent – men of the same age.
– Are complications possible?
– The main negative point is the same increased sensitivity of the teeth. Their sharp reaction to hot, cold, sweet, sour. To avoid this, we give patients special gels. The second moment is when the teeth are re-whitened to a matte shine and bright white color (“tiled”). Some patients specifically insist on this, but these teeth look unnatural. By the way, yellow-brown teeth whiten much better than gray ones.
– What should be avoided immediately after the whitening procedure?
– First of all, rejection of food containing bright colors, such as wine, bright vegetables, otherwise we can get the opposite effect, up to the most unexpected color shades. And it is better to abstain.
