A sedentary lifestyle is conducive to disease not only because it is associated with little physical activity, reports the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. According to nine articles and analyzes published in the journal, and based on the results of international research, staying too long in a sitting position may be a new risk factor, especially conducive to heart disease and shortens life.
The August issue of the periodical presents various aspects of the problem and suggests possible remedies.
Although it is not yet known exactly what mechanisms make prolonged sitting harmful, specialists encourage greater activity in reducing this phenomenon. Especially children should not spend most of the day sitting – at school, in transport, in front of the TV or at the computer. The authors of the study have already started campaigns to reduce the time spent in a sitting position – for example, by promoting walking or cycling and promoting infrastructure reconstruction (PAP).
