The main symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection include fever, cough, and breathing problems. Doctors in Italy, France and Spain have noticed another COVID-19-related symptom that occurs in younger patients – skin lesions on the feet.
The General Council of the Official Colleges of Podiatry in Spain is creating a registry of patients with suspected and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who have characteristic purple spots on their feet, similar to those found in measles. Doctors in Italy, France, and Spain have observed this symptom in children and adolescents with COVID-19. Interestingly, the spots on the feet appear before other symptoms characteristic of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The spots usually appear around the toes and heal without leaving any traces on the skin. The association of skin rash with SARS-CoV-2 infection is not supported by scientific studies due to the short duration of the disease.
The International Federation of Podiatry published a report on the treatment of a 13-year-old boy who had strange spots on his feet last month. Initially, doctors assumed that the baby had been bitten by a spider. Two days later the boy developed other symptoms – fever, muscle pain, headache and intense itching of the feet. After more than a week, the symptoms disappeared. Probably the boy was infected with the coronavirus, as were his mother and sister.
A small Italian study found that one in five COVID-19 patients develop skin symptoms.
Experts recommend staying calm
Experts suggest considering foot changes as a new symptom of COVID-19. At the same time, they appeal to remain calm. If a person has changes in their feet that are not caused by a sting, burn, or other injury, it is also important to get a diagnosis to see if the skin rash is actually related to the coronavirus.
Podologists urge to avoid unjustified alarms. Skin changes can be consulted with a doctor via TV. Experts remind you that it is better to avoid going to clinics and hospital emergency departments unless it is an emergency.
