A new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, Delta (first detected in India), has been spreading in Europe for several months. In Great Britain, it is already 99 percent. all new infections with this pathogen. The first cases of this variant were also detected in Poland, Germany, Belgium and Spain. In India, however, there have been reports of a new variant – Delta Plus.
– The Delta virus continues to mutate, another Delta Plus variant has been detected in India, the direction of changes is a further increase in infectivity and faster development of the disease, with lung damage – warns on Twitter expert of the Supreme Medical Council for COVID-19 Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski. In his opinion, it is necessary to tightly protect borders, test patients and accelerate vaccinations. Preparations for the next wave of the pandemic are also essential.
– Despite the holidays, you need to be vigilant and monitor the situation, because the Delta variant has a great epidemic potential. The next wave may come quickly, real-time daily data on new hospitalizations needed, taking into account the immunity status (vaccinated, convalescents) – says the NRL expert.
According to the Indian Ministry of Health, the Delta Plus variant has been detected in several statessuch as Maharashtra (the third largest and second largest), Kerala in southwest India and Madhya Pradesh (a state in central India).
The President of the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products, Dr. Grzegorz Cessak, ensures the effectiveness of vaccinations. Is Delta Plus a threat to Poland?
This morning, the Ministry of Health informed about 165 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 and 35 deaths. For several weeks, the number of patients has been steadily declining, and experts confirm that the third wave of the pandemic is dying out.
However, this does not mean that the virus is in retreat. Specialists warn that it is the madman Delta (and potentially – its subsequent mutations) that is currently the biggest threat that could lead to another wave of the epidemic.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health announced that Poles returning from Great Britain will be subject to mandatory quarantine if they do not show a negative test result. This compulsion does not apply to the vaccinated person.
Today, Adam Niedzielski pointed out that a return to pandemic restrictions is possible if the Delta virus attacks Poland.
– There is nothing to be ruled out. However, I would like to point out that Delta has been with us for at least nearly 2 months when we confirmed the first case. On the other hand, let’s look at what is happening in Great Britain. There, an increase in infections up to several thousand per day is observed due to the Delta variant – referring this situation to Poland, this number should be divided by two. With 3000 infections, because we are talking about such an increase, our healthcare system is doing well. In the “record” time of the 3rd wave, we had 35 thousand. cases a day – he said in an interview with “Fakt”.
Vaccines effective against the Delta variant
The minister also noted in the interview quoted that the most frequently administered vaccine in Poland is the Pfizer preparation, which “in the research shows the greatest effectiveness against the Delta variant”.
– Vaccinations will protect us against most variants, maybe against all – explained Dr. Jerzy Jaroszewicz, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology of the Medical University of Silesia at Specialist Hospital No. 1 in Bytom. He stressed, however, that this would only be the case if we took two doses of the anti-COVID-19 preparation and two weeks elapsed. This time is needed to build up immunity after vaccination. – We really haven’t had a patient in the hospital who received two doses of the vaccine and became clinically ill. The vaccination efficiency is very, very high and we know that also against the Alpha and Delta variants. But remember that after the first dose you can still get sick.
