A moment of nostalgia: what scents we loved in the 90s

White flowers, overripe fruits, spices, oranges, tangerines and cherries … Do you remember what your childhood and adolescence smelled like?

Deodorants

Children of the 80s and 90s grew up in a difficult time, when niche perfumery did not yet exist, and not everyone could afford expensive French perfumes. We survived as best we could: we used deodorants instead of perfume. They were usually produced in Poland and smelled like vanilla or monofruit. You could decide who you are today – melon, orange, cherry or watermelon, spray deodorant on your clothes or body and smell it for half a day. The smell was thermonuclear. A couple of drops were enough to deafen the sense of smell for a while and not feel anything except synthetic vanilla or that very fruit.

Roller Sticks

In the arsenal of teenagers there were also perfume sticks with rollers instead of a spray. They smelled of something sweet, viscous and slightly sticky, reminiscent of the smell of either gum, or jam, and more often both, flavored with a generous portion of vanilla. They smeared them on the neck and temples. From the good – they were unstable, they could be used several times a day and at the same time it was impossible to cause discomfort to others.

Perfume

Grown women preferred heavy artillery. The most coveted scent then was Poison Christian Dior: intoxicating white flowers, overripe fruits sprinkled with spices, incense, viscous honey, cloves, sandalwood. He could be loved or hated. As a rule, he was loved. Because it was an expensive French perfume. They smelled of luxury and better life.

Those who couldn’t afford them found a cheaper counterpart in the form of Jeanne Arthes’ Cobra. Instead of plums, there was a peach and an orange, and a little less spices. Instead of incense – bitter marigolds. He was less languid and dizzy, but he also conveyed the general mood of luxury and abundance of foreign life. And if Poison was worn only for a holiday and to the theater, then the train from the Cobra scent hovered in buses, trolleybuses, cinemas.

Lovers of hyperdose sweets found their happiness in Angel Mugler. This bottle contained the whole dream of a sweet life, including a trip to the confectionery department: chocolate, caramel, honey, cotton candy, amber, which immodestly coexisted with rose, jasmine, orchid and lily of the valley.

Overwhelmed with sweet and floral aromas, the world wanted freshness, purity and coolness. New items that can be found on store shelves even today, fresh aquatic aroma Cool Water Davidoff, filled with dreams of the sea, the beach and synthetic fruits, appeared at the most opportune time. With him, you could mentally be transported to the heavenly shores and create your own bounty kingdom in an apartment or office.

Almost at the same time, L’Eau Kenzo Pour Femme came out, inviting for a walk to a lake with fog and ice water lilies, with a cold watermelon and freshly cut grass. It was a kind of the first minimalistic Zen fragrance, conveying a state of purity, nature and peace.

Someone, out of habit, continued to use the sweet and flower bestsellers. Well, do not throw away the perfume !? At that time it was not customary to have a collection of fragrances. And before buying a new perfume, you had to use the old one. However, the most daring and desperate plunged headlong into frosty purity, freshness and minimalism. And together with them we entered the 2000s.
