A meal rich in protein increases the feeling
    • 10 years ago

The feeling of satiety consists not only of this uncomfortable feeling of “too tight pants”. In the online magazine Cell we can read that the signals that travel between our gut and brain have just been discovered and that make us feel satiated after a protein-rich meal.

Understanding this phenomenon could pave the way for future solutions in the treatment of and obesity prevention. Food intake can be controlled by opioid receptors on the nerves that have been detected in the walls of the portal vein – the main blood vessel – that drains blood from the gut. Stimulating these receptors increases food intake while blocking them inhibits the desire to eat.

Researchers also found peptides, which are products of digested food proteins. They can block receptors, reducing appetite. A signal is sent to the brain, which then goes to the intestine, which releases glucose in response, which inhibits the urge to eat. Mice that were experimented with eliminating these peptides were unable to secrete glucose, and were not found to feel full after ingestion high protein meal. These peptides have also been detected in the walls of the portal vein of humans, so this mechanism may also take place in the human body. “This discovery explains the satiety phenomenon following a protein diet, which has been known for a long time but has never been explained,” says Dr. Gilles Mithieux from the Universite de Lyon, France – «It makes us understand controlling food, which in the future may allow us to learn more about obesity »- he adds. source: ScienceNews.pl
