Despite the fact that in stores there is now a fairly large selection of a wide variety of curtains, it is not always possible to choose what fits perfectly into the interior of your room. Therefore, many people prefer not to buy finished products, but a fabric that is suitable in color and texture, since it would be a desire to sew curtains under the power of any needlewoman.

In a modern home, curtains serve not only to decorate the interior, but also to protect from prying eyes. This is especially important if your apartment is on the ground floor or you live in a one-story building with windows facing the street. All this means that the material must be chosen dense. There are many beautiful curtain fabrics in stores. Most importantly, they have a fairly large width, so it makes sense to choose a special fabric for curtains. Before heading to the store, calculate how much material you need. You need to know:
– the length of the cornice; – the length of future curtains.
Remember that the products must be cut to the right. Pay attention to the width of the cut. The curtains for the room can be from one panel, from two or even three, if the window is very wide. In the first case, a cut is needed, the width of which is equal to the length of the cornice, multiplied by about 1,5: even very simple rectangular curtains look ugly if there are no assemblies on them at all. In this case, one length of the product is taken plus 15–25 cm for processing the top and bottom. In the second case, you can choose a fabric, the width of which is approximately 1,5-1,7 times the width of the window. You will need, respectively, two lengths of the product. For a three-piece curtain, the cut width is 1/3 of the window width, multiplied by the same factor as in the previous case. Three lengths of the product are taken.

Even very simple curtains with a small number of assemblies will look much more spectacular if you decorate the upper part of the window with a lambrequin. For him, you also need to calculate the amount of fabric. The length of a classic lambrequin is about 1/5 of the length of the curtains, or slightly less. The width is equal to the width of the eaves. Estimate the width of the cut and add one, two or three lambrequin lengths to the main amount of fabric.
For a lambrequin with puffs or transverse assemblies, a cut of a slightly longer length is needed, about one and a half times
The thinner the fabric, the more gathers
In addition to thick curtains, you will most likely also need thin ones. And in this case, you really need a lot of fabric. Of course, tulle or organza are often wider. But in any case, a cut in one length is not enough. The amount of fabric in this case is calculated based on the length of the cornice – it must be multiplied by 3 or 3, 5. For chiffon or cambric, the coefficient will be slightly less – from 2 to 2,5.
Sewing such curtains is a somewhat more laborious business, but in general it is quite affordable. These curtains differ from conventional curtains in the assembly along their entire length. From which it follows that the fabric on them needs a little more than for other products of this kind. Calculate the required width by multiplying the length of the cornice by 1,8–2,5. The length of the product is multiplied by the same factor. In this case, the coefficient itself depends on the stiffness of the fabric. For soft material it will be 2–2,5, for hard material – 1,8–2.
