First vaccine against new variants of Omikron

An Omicron mutation named BA.5 dominates the summer wave of covid infections. The new sub-variants are the most contagious types of virus by far, but their impact on the lungs is less than that of previous versions.

The UK is the first country to approve a dual vaccine targeting both the original COVID-19 virus and its newer variant, Omikron. The product contains 25 µg of the vaccine against the original version and 25 µg against the Omicron mutations. It is safe and effective.

The first vaccines used during the pandemic were developed to combat the original form of the virus that emerged in Wuhan, China in late 2019.

Since then, the virus that causes COVID-19 has mutated significantly. There is a flood of new variants that may bypass some of our defense mechanisms created by current vaccines. The new sub-variants also caused a large increase in the incidence of the disease worldwide during the summer.

How does the new vaccine work? Provides better protection

Moderna’s latest vaccine is called Spikevax, and is designed to both defend against the original strain and the first Omicron variant (BA.1) that came out last winter. It is known as a bivalent vaccine because it is expected to work against two strains of COVID-19.

Studies have shown that the updated vaccine is safe and provides better immune protection against the newer variants. The levels of antibodies against the first version of the virus were 1,7 times higher in those who received the new vaccine.

The preparation has also undergone immunity tests against the newer variants of Omicron (BA.4 and BA.5), which are causing the current coronavirus summer wave in most countries of the world. Again, a higher level of protection from the “dual” vaccine has been shown.

The new Moderna vaccine is already submitted for approval by regulators in the European Union, Canada and Australia. In the EU, including Poland, it is scheduled for September. However, experts are still unsure which COVID-19 variants we will have to face in the coming months.
