A kitten in a new home: how to train a kitten to a new home
A new tenant requires attention and affection. In the early days, he will be bored and uncomfortable. How quickly the kitten gets used to the new home is up to you. Your task is to help your pet get rid of fear, quickly get used to it and teach it to behave correctly in your home.
Kitten in a new home: how to prepare
Prepare the necessary things for your pet in advance: a litter box, litter for him, bowls for food and drink, a lounger, a scratching post, brushes and a first aid kit.
The correct organization depends on how many days a kitten will get used to a new home.
Before you take a pet, do the preparatory work:
- Remove wires, detergents, a waste basket, small items that he could swallow from the room. Hide anything that poses a danger to the baby.
- When the kitten gets used to it, he explores the space and climbs onto the windowsill. Therefore, pull a mosquito net over the window for safety.
- Ask about the diet, food, and litter that your previous owner used.
- Organize a personal permanent place for your baby: a lounger, trays with food and water. Place them in the corner.
- Take your pet home before the weekend or while on vacation. This way he will be cared for.
Such an organization will make the pet feel safe.
How to train a kitten to a new home
While the baby is adapting, he meows plaintively. The kitten is bored and sad for 2-3 days. It will take him no more than a week to fully get used to his new home. So that the kitten is not lonely in a new place, help him to adapt.
Once you arrive at the house, place your pet carrier in the room. Do not forcefully pull it out. The kitten will look around and when it dares, it will come out on its own. Over time, open the doors of the room and give him access to other rooms. Do not allow small children and animals that live in the house to visit the baby in the first days. If a cat already lives in the house, wipe it down with a piece of cloth. Then rub the little pet with it. In this case, the old tenant will treat the newcomer friendly.
If the kitten gets lost and can’t find the litter box in the new home, use a spray to get his attention.
To make the kitten feel like it is in a friendly atmosphere, carry it in your arms, pet it and play with it more often. So he will get positive emotions. Call him by his nickname when you feed or pet him. If the kitten has misbehaved, do not punish him physically. It is enough to say loudly: “Phew!” or spray with a stream of water from a spray to stop aggressive behavior.
Immediately teach your pet to the scratching post so that it does not ruin the furniture. Trim your baby’s claws every week.
These tips will teach your kitten new rules of behavior. Very soon the baby will get used to it and feel calm.
