A heart attack in patients suffering from COVID-19 is associated with more severe damage to the heart muscle, according to an analysis conducted by students of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
Students from the Science Club at the 19st Clinic and Department of Cardiology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice compared the course of acute myocardial infarction in patients with COVID-XNUMX and in patients who did not suffer from infection.

The study compared two groups of patients. The first group consisted of patients suffering from COVID-19 or after an infection with myocardial infarction, and the second – patients with the same cardiovascular disease who had not been infected with SARS-CoV-2 at the time of the study. 145 patients with acute myocardial infarction were analyzed. Thirty patients were simultaneously infected with the coronavirus.
First, a database of patients hospitalized in the 19st Department and Clinic of Cardiology at the Upper Silesian Medical Center in Katowice was completed. Then a statistical analysis was performed. Thanks to the collected data, it was possible to determine differences in the course of treatment and long-term follow-up of patients with myocardial infarction with or without COVID-XNUMX infection.
- “There is an overlap between two pandemics.” It’s COVID-19 and heart failure
The most common heart attack in COVID19 patients is extensive causing damage to the heart muscles and is associated with a higher elevation of interleukin-6 levels, incl. activating T lymphocytes responsible for the proper maintenance of the immune system – demonstrated the students.
“Patients with myocardial infarction and coexisting COVID-19 infection are older, have features of renal failure, and myocardial infarction is associated with more severe damage to the heart muscle” – said co-author of the project Marta Gorczyca. “These phenomena are accompanied by high levels of inflammatory markers such as interleukin 6, which is responsible for the initiation and development of the inflammatory response,” added project co-author Daniel Gondko.
