The outbreak of migratory ticks, spreading a dangerous disease, was detected near the Polish border — reported by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. Until recently, these mites were found only in northern Africa and the countries of the Mediterranean basin. However, as the climate warms, they expand their habitats.
- Migratory ticks transmit, among others bleeding eye disease. This is a serious challenge for medicine, because so far no effective therapy has been invented, and its mortality rate is as high as 50%.
- According to ECDC data, outbreaks of migratory ticks were recorded in the Zakarpattia Oblast, near the border with Poland. Previously, this mite had no chance of surviving in the region due to low temperatures. However, global warming has changed that

Scientists have identified 2021 new places where migratory ticks are found since October 153, according to data published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (an EU agency dealing with the threat posed by infectious diseases). These mites appeared in large numbers in Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Balkan countries as well as Turkey, Our Country and Ukraine. Until now, Ukrainian outbreaks of ticks were mainly in the east of the country, but the hostile mites They also appeared in the Zakarpattia Oblast, located near the border with Poland.
The migratory tick has its habitat mainly in Africa and the Mediterranean zone. In appearance, for a layman, it does not differ from the ticks that are constantly present in Poland. This species of arachnid appeared in Poland in the 30s, but it was unable to survive in a climate that was relatively cold for it. However, along with its warming, the migratory tick has better and better conditions to reproduce in our latitude.
The arachnid effectively and gradually increases its area of occurrence. This is because it can move by hooking up to migratory birds, exported farm animals and traveling people. It is quite a dangerous phenomenon because these mites spread pathogens responsible for a very dangerous disease — Crimean Congo fever, also known as bleeding eye fever.

Crimean Congo fever – what is this disease?
Migratory ticks are responsible e.g. for transmitting Crimean Congo fever. Its name comes from the first two discovered and confirmed outbreaks of the disease. The maximum incubation period for the virus after a tick bite is nine days. The symptoms of this disease are initially similar to the common flu. Belong to them:
- high fever
- chills
- muscle aches
- arthralgia
- headaches
- sensitivity to light
- bloody vomiting and diarrhea
- gastrointestinal bleeding
- effusions for mucous membranes (including eyes)
Crimean Congo fever – treatment
This disease is characterized by high mortality – even at the level of 50%. WHO put it on the list of pathogens with epidemic potential. So far, no cure or vaccine has been found for it, and the treatment is symptomatic. In this case, medics try to maintain the acid-base and water-electrolyte balance in the body. Ribavirin is used to combat the virus itself.
