The wave of COVID-19 cases is gradually declining, but after the disease, the problem of fungal infections may arise – a dangerous “yellow fungus” was recently discovered in India. This is another form of fungal infection after the black and white versions (Candidiasis), and early evidence suggests it is also more dangerous.
- After the epidemic of “black fungus”, the first case of infection with “yellow fungus” appeared
- The disease was diagnosed in India in a 45-year-old patient who previously had COVID-19
- Untreated infection with the “yellow fungus” may result in multi-organ failure, and due to non-specific symptoms it is difficult to diagnose

The Indian news agency ANI informed about the infection with the “yellow fungus”, which was diagnosed in a 45-year-old patient who had previously suffered from COVID-19. The case was reported in the city of Ghaziabad in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. At some point, the patient’s condition deteriorated drastically – the patient had earlier symptoms of black and white fungus, which are also complications after coronavirus treatment. The patient is treated with amphotericin B and at the moment it is the only known therapy.
In India, the number of people infected with the “black fungus” – mucormycosis, with a mortality rate of nearly 50 percent, has recently increased dramatically. The authorities decided to introduce an epidemic in the country.

«Yellow Mushroom» – characteristics
Yellow mushroom is a fungal infection that generally does not occur in humans, but in lizards. Experts have hypothesized that this rare disease appeared in humans because COVID-19 and its treatment weaken the body’s natural defenses. The fungus detected early is curable, although it causes more dangerous conditions than the black one. In some cases, it may cause multiple organ failure. However, there is a lack of research and observations of experts who are just getting to know the phenomenon.

Symptoms of the “yellow mushroom”
The infection causes fatigue, weight loss, and decreased appetite. Untreated, it results in purulent infections, tissue necrosis or even organ failure. Mucormycosis, or “black fungus”, causes easy-to-see lesions on the face of patients. The first symptoms of the “yellow fungus” are much less characteristic, which will cause problems in correctly diagnosing.
The development of fungal infection is favored by a high level of humidity, exceeding 40%, improper hygiene, and expired food.
