Researchers from Newcastle University and Glasgow University have conducted studies that show that through proper diet you can reverse type 2 diabetes. Losing weight can affect disease remission and also help people recover. If the diabetic returns to high-calorie food, the disease may attack him again.

  1. Research by British scientists shows that type 2 diabetes remission is possible if a diabetic follows a proper diet
  2. The diet is quite extreme, although simple in assumptions
  3. So far, it has been known that losing weight has a positive effect on the health of diabetics. The tests carried out show that the disease can go back and the patient will recover

The one-year study was conducted by British scientists on a group of people who suffer from type 2 diabetes (diabetes mellitus, non-insulin dependent). The aim of the study called DiRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial) was to verify whether it is possible to regress the disease with the right diet and weight.

The volunteers were divided into two groups. One group includes people who have had type 2 diabetes for 6 years. This group was to follow the standard dietary recommendations for diabetics recommended by GPs. The second one went to those who had suffered from this disease for a shorter time. They followed a diet that was developed by scientists to significantly reduce calories to 825-853 a day for the first 3 to 5 months of the diet, and consumed food in liquid form (mainly soups and smoothies).

Over the course of the experiment, the participants, under the supervision of their doctor, could systematically include other food products in their diets.

The results of the clinical trials performed were surprising. In 86 percent of those subjects who lost 15 kg or more of this diet, type 2 diabetes regressed. Also 57% of those who lost 10-15 kg and 34% who lost 5-10 kg stopped getting sick.

At the same time, scientists reported remission of the disease in only 4 percent. control group members. Overall, they lost an average of only 1 kg, while in the group following the extreme diet this value was as much as 10 kg – we read on health.gazeta.pl

“Significant weight loss leads to a reduction in fat in the liver and pancreas, which allows both organs to return to normal function,” explains one researcher, Roy Taylor of Newcastle University.

Diabetes mellitus is a real scourge in the world. Over 350 million people suffer from it, or about 5 percent. global population, and this number continues to grow. It is estimated that only every twentieth case of the disease is type 1 diabetes, the rest is type 2 diabetes, which is favored by abdominal obesity. Unfortunately, every third person in Poland with type 2 diabetes is not diagnosed, and the untreated disease may cause serious complications, including blindness or limb amputation due to the development of the so-called diabetic foot.

Not all diets are healthy and safe for our body. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before starting any diet, even if you do not have any health concerns. When choosing a diet, never follow the current fashion. Remember that some diets, incl. low in specific nutrients or strongly limiting calories, and mono-diets can be devastating for the body, carry a risk of eating disorders, and may also increase appetite, contributing to a quick return to the former weight.
