Worldwide, research is ongoing to complement the area of answers to the question of who is most at risk from severe COVID-19 and death from coronavirus infection. Scientists have just discovered another such factor. It is vitamin D deficiency.

  1. Israeli scientists analyzed pre-infection vitamin D levels in more than 19 patients who were hospitalized due to COVID-XNUMX
  2. Vitamin D deficiency was found to increase the risk of a severe or critical course of coronavirus infection by as much as 14 times
  3. A similar relationship was observed in the case of the risk of death – mortality in patients with insufficient vitamin D levels was over 25%. compared to 2 percent. in people with normal concentration

Vitamin D and COVID-19

The association of vitamin D with the severe course of COVID-19 has been identified by researchers from the Azrieli Department of Bar-Ilan University in Safed and the Galilee Medical Center (GMC) in Nahariya, Israel. In the article published in the journal “Plos One”, the researchers pointed out that Vitamin D deficiency may worsen the symptoms of COVID-19 and increase the risk of death in those infected with the coronavirus.

As part of the study, the results of measuring vitamin D concentration in 1 patients were analyzed. 176 patients admitted to the GMC between April 2020 and February 2021 with a positive PCR test result. Vitamin levels were measured at different times, but always before COVID-19 infection (in some patients it was two weeks before onset, in others it was longer, but never exceeded two years before infection with SARS-CoV-2).

Vitamin D deficiency patients at risk of severe illness and death from SARS-CoV-2 infection

It turned out that patients with vitamin D deficiency (i.e. those with vitamin D levels below 20 ng / ml) were 14 times more likely to experience severe or critical COVID-19 than those patients with vitamin D levels above 40 ng. / ml.

A huge difference between these patients was also observed in terms of the risk of death from COVID-19. Mortality in people with vitamin D deficiency was 25,6%, while in patients who were normal in terms of the level of this vitamin in the body, it was 2,3%.

Our results suggest that it is advisable to maintain normal vitamin D levels. This will be beneficial for those infected with the virus. There is a clear consensus on regular vitamin D supplementation, as recommended by local health authorities as well as global health organizations

Dr Amiel Dror, who led the study, commented on the results.

«This is especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic when adequate vitamin D levels have the added benefit of maintaining a healthy immune response to respiratory diseases»Added Dr. Amir Bashkin, an endocrinologist participating in the study.

An underestimated vitamin

Vitamin D has been known to play a huge role in the functioning of the whole organism for years, but most of us think it is still a “forgotten” vitamin. We forget not only how big is its impact on the proper functioning of individual systems of our body, but also that we have to take care of its proper level in the body.

Vitamin D (or actually D3) is produced in the body from the compound (7-dehydrocholesterol), which is synthesized in the skin as a result of UVB radiation. In this way, as much as 80-100 percent. vitamin D3 present in our body. However, for this process to take place, we must expose our body to the sun. While it is not difficult in summer, such an exhibition is very difficult for most of the year. This is why doctors recommend supplementation with vitamin D3 and ensuring that it is included in the daily diet (although this is responsible for «only» 20% of the requirement for vitamin D).
