Hypertension – an epidemic of the XNUMXst century

The results are all the more surprising as medicine can deal with high blood pressure. There are many cheap, easy and effective treatments, ranging from a healthier diet and exercise to medications that safely lower blood pressure, of course, in consultation with your doctor.

What’s more, prophylaxis is just as easy, and measuring blood pressure is painless and non-invasive. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 8,5 million people die each year from hypertension. Hypertension causes, among others stroke, heart failure and failure of other organs such as the kidneys.

Majid Ezzati’s team at London’s Imperial College used the results of a population study from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 from 184 countries. As a result of them it turned out that the number of people suffering from hypertension in 30 years has doubled from 648 million in 1990 to almost 1,3 billion in 2019. Overall, nearly a third of men and women between the ages of 30 and 79 worldwide had high blood pressure.

– For the purposes of the study, we defined hypertension as systolic blood pressure (upper blood pressure reading) 140 mmHg and higher, diastolic blood pressure (lower blood pressure reading) 90 mmHg or higher. We’ve included people who test normal but are taking medication for high blood pressure, Majid Ezzati, research leader, told CNN.

Hypertension – types

According to the guidelines of the Polish Society of Hypertension, the determination of blood pressure equal to or higher than 140 mm Hg for the systolic value and / or 90 mm Hg for the diastolic value allows for the diagnosis of arterial hypertension.

«Depending on the values of the blood pressure, one can talk about hypertension of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree (the higher the pressure, the higher its degree and the risk of complications at the same time). Only systolic blood pressure is elevated among the elderly. We are talking then about the so-called isolated systolic hypertension, »the experts explain.

The types of arterial hypertension are presented in the table:
