Cancer develops insidiously and often shows no symptoms for many years. Sometimes, however, you can observe minor changes that herald the development of a serious disease.

In Poland, the average time from the onset of the first symptoms of cancer to the start of treatment exceeds 250 days. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the symptoms that precede the development of the disease, i.e. tumor prodromes (also known as paraneoplastic or paraneoplastic syndromes). Their early diagnosis, before the clinical manifestation of the proliferative process, may be of key importance for the implementation of prompt diagnosis and treatment.

  1. Read more about the inconspicuous symptoms of cancer

Paraneoplastic syndromes can occur as systemic or organ-cutaneous syndromes, as well as hematological, neurological, nephrological, endocrine or metabolic syndromes. They can also manifest as systemic symptoms, such as wasting or weight loss syndrome. A signal that cannot be ignored is itching – often the first sign of cancer. We advise on what else is worth paying special attention to.

Paraneoplastic organ and skin syndromes:

  1. Painful vesic-erosive changes on the mucous membranes: lips, gums, cheek, tongue and conjunctiva may indicate lymphoma, Castelman’s tumors, thymomas or sarcomas.
  2. Brown discoloration and papillary growths of the epidermis, mainly in the area of skin folds, armpits and inguinal pits, in the elbow and knee bends, in the area of the lips and on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity may indicate gastric cancer, less often lung cancer.
  3. Rapid, massive sowing of seborrheic warts, most often on the trunk, accompanied by severe itching of the skin may be a symptom of gastric adenocarcinoma, cancer of the haematopoietic system, breast or lung.
  4. The creeping and separating of the epidermis, as well as the smoothing and bright red color of the tongue are typical of pancreatic cancer, kidney and lung tumors.
  5. The growth of very long, light and thin hair, initially on the face, then also on the skin of the whole body, except for the hands, feet and genital area, may indicate cancer of the lung, intestine, pancreas, bladder, as well as acute leukemia and Ewing’s sarcoma .
  6. Red-blue edema-infiltration foci with blisters or pustules on the edges may indicate neoplasms of the haematopoietic system.
  7. Blisters, mainly located in areas of risk of injury, resolving to scarring and milia, are typical of lymphomas, leukemia, and myeloma.
  8. Hyperkeratotic foci located on the fingers, feet, ears and nose, often accompanied by nail plate dystrophy, may herald cancer of the upper respiratory tract and esophagus.
  9. Erythematous and oedematous changes in the face and limbs, especially around the eyes, may suggest breast, lung and nasopharyngeal cancer.
  10. Painful, deep, rapidly spreading skin ulcers and lesions, even after the slightest trauma to the skin, may be evidence of leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma or polycythemia vera.
  11. Dry, scaly lesions that cover the entire skin, including folds and folds, may be a symptom of lymphoma, myeloma, Hodgkin’s sarcoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, or cervical cancer.

It turns out that both cancer and its treatment can have an adverse effect on the human body. It reduces immunity, has a negative effect on the skin, hair and nails. That is why proper care with the use of cosmetics intended for people undergoing oncological treatment is important, for example:

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (very rare):

  1. Muscle weakness, impotence, orthostatic hypotension, dry mouth, and sweating disorders may be indicative of small-cell lung cancer.
  2. Photosensitivity, impaired visual acuity, visual field limitations, and dizziness may be evidence of breast, ovarian, or small cell lung cancer.
  3. Sensory disturbances may herald small cell lung cancer.

Paraneoplastic hematological syndromes:

  1. Spontaneous bruising, ecchymosis, gastrointestinal and respiratory bleeding, skin necrosis, gangrene, venous thrombosis, tachycardia and edema may indicate disseminated neoplastic processes or leukemia.
  2. Recurrent epistaxis, bruising after minor or even absent trauma, heavy menstrual bleeding and prolonged bleeding after surgery may herald multiple myeloma, lymphoma leukemia, polycythemia vera, idiopathic bone marrow fibrosis, or Wilms’ tumor.
  3. A palpable hardening of the vein, pain, tenderness and redness are typical of pancreatic cancer.

Paraneoplastic metabolic and endocrine syndromes:

  1. Weakness, hypokalemia, discoloration of the skin may indicate lung cancer.
  2. Severe hunger, weakness, vomiting or nausea, as well as sweating, tachycardia, trembling hands, restlessness, and disturbed balance and vision may be symptoms of mesothelioma, sarcoma and small cell lung cancer.

Paraneoplastic nephrological syndromes:

  1. Proteinuria and hematuria may be evidence of breast cancer, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer.
  2. The growth retardation or pollakiuria may be a symptom of myeloma, lymphoma, lung cancer, melanoma, leukemia, or gastrointestinal malignancies.

Paraneoplastic rheumatological syndromes (so-called connective tissue syndromes):

  1. A reddened, warmer than surrounding tissue, a swollen, and painful joint may indicate lung cancer, leukemia, or lymphoma.
  2. Bone pain in the shin area and joint discomfort and limited mobility may indicate non-small cell lung cancer, tumors of the thymus or esophageal cancer. A characteristic symptom is a change in the shape of the fingers, the so-called stick fingers.
  3. Fatigue, a feeling of crash, lack of appetite, weight loss and low-grade fever may indicate lymphoma, cancer of the digestive system or liver cancer.
  4. Impairment of tear secretion, burning, hypersensitivity to sunlight, dry mucous membranes of the genital organs and the mouth, as well as frequent fungal infections and tooth decay may indicate lymphoma, liver cancer or cancer of the digestive system.
  5. Changes in the color of the skin of the fingers, especially on the thumb or hand, caused by paroxysmal spasm of the arteries of the fingers, caused by cold or emotions, may indicate cancer of the kidney, ovary, gastrointestinal cancer, and lung cancer. In addition to changes in skin color, there is a feeling of coolness and paresthesia.

The presented clinical characteristics of paraneoplastic syndromes include only selected issues related to their most common classic forms. There are many more prodromes of neoplastic diseases and scientific research provides more and more recent data on this subject.
