Improving a smile with a nail file?
TikTok is a platform that young people have taken over. Every now and then another so-called challanege, or challenges. Some of them are completely harmless and most of the time funny, others are embarrassing, and some are downright dangerous. The latter group includes correcting the smile, in the correct shape of the teeth, using a nail file.

After the procedure, a satisfied girl says that “it really works” and jokes that the next step will be filing her teeth to resemble vampire fangs. The clip itself does not look disturbing. No blood is spilled, no screams of pain, so it seems that this method is an easy and quick way to even out the “ones” and improve the smile. Unfortunately, this is not true. What will happen to the teeth that we treat with a nail file?
Dentist: A fashion that will pass quickly and can cost a lot of health
I honestly admit that the thought of filing my teeth with a file made my hair bristle on my head. I asked the dentist Romana Markiewicz-Piotrowska from the Dental Clinic of Piotrowscy i Bejnarowicz about the consequences of taking part in this challenge:
– Such a procedure may have serious consequences. The current fashion, which will probably pass in a moment, may cost us a lot of health. The enamel consists of prisms, rubbing them with a file, which is a tool completely unsuitable for contact with the tooth, apart from visible damage in the form of changing the shape of the tooth, we make micro-damage to the enamel prisms much deeper than the human eye can see – explains the expert.
In the future, damage to the tooth may lead to further chipping of the enamel and faster abrasion, which will not only adversely affect their appearance (and they were supposed to be prettier), but also cause pain.
– Teeth treated with a file can produce strong, very unpleasant symptoms of heat and cold, which may worsen over time. If someone rubs the file against the tooth very hard, apart from mechanical damage, it can destroy the tooth with the temperature that is released during quick rubbing with the file. Such damage can even cause pulpitis and the need for root canal treatment in a dentist’s office. Mechanical damage to prisms, if they are minimal, must be polished by a dentist. Larger damage may require filling or even veneers on the tooth. In a word, the tooth tissue treated with a file becomes weakened and may have more serious consequences over time than just changing the shape of the tooth – explains Markiewicz-Piotrowska.
It remains to be hoped that this challenge will end as soon as it started and that the toll of teenagers visiting dentists with toothache caused by a desire to improve their appearance at home will not have time to harvest.
