A quite common disease is a central retinal vein thrombus. Its cause is usually hardening of the arteries and arterial hypertension – hence the disease occurs in middle-aged and elderly people.

If a blood clot forms in a vein, circulation in the retina is disturbed, haemorrhages, and severely impaired vision.

The symptoms in the form of spots and scotomas in front of the eyes are not severe and the patient often comes to the doctor too late.

The prognosis is more favorable than in the case of retinal artery embolism, but usually the eyesight is greatly impaired, and some people suffer from late complications, such as after glaucoma.

Treatment must be carried out by an internist and an ophthalmologist.
