A case of tropical dengue in the Netherlands. The woman caught it in France

In the Netherlands, a case of dengue fever has been confirmed – reported nltimes.nl. A woman was diagnosed with this tropical mosquito-borne disease. She was infected with it while she was in the south of France. It is not known what condition she is in.

She contracted Dengue in the south of France

The Dutch National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported a case of a woman infected with dengue, a tropical disease transmitted mainly by Egyptian mosquitoes, but also by tiger mosquitoes. It is known that the woman fell ill in August while in the south of France (it is known that she was in La Croix-Valmer near Saint-Tropez). The symptoms appeared after returning to the country.

As far as we know, the woman is the first person in the Netherlands to contract dengue in Southern Europe (dengue is mainly found in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia).

– It’s not too weird. We know that the tiger mosquito is also found in southern Europe and sometimes transmits the virus, said a RIVM spokesman. The official reassured that this disease is very rare, and most people – if they get sick – recover within a week. Only a small number of infections are serious and can be life-threatening.

The symptoms of dengue resemble the flu: fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain

Dengue fever is the most common viral infection that is transmitted by insects in the world. The main source of dengue infection is Egyptian mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti), and is also spread by tiger mosquitoes.

Dengue symptoms usually appear 3–14 days after an infected mosquito bites. The disease is characterized by fever, rash, severe pain in the head, muscles and joints. It can develop into a hemorrhagic form with petechiae and bleeding from the mucous membranes, and can lead to shock, severe complications and death.

Already in March, Marcos Espinal, director of the infectious diseases division of the Pan-American Health Organization (the regional branch of the World Health Organization), pointed out that the spread of dengue and coronavirus can be prevented in a similar way – washing hands often, avoiding contact, and especially people coughing. In the case of dengue disease, eliminating mosquitoes is also an important preventive measure.

It is estimated that dengue affects about 60 million people annually, 18% of whom are requires hospitalization, and nearly 13,6 thous. dies.
