A breakthrough treatment by doctors from Gdańsk. They saved lungs that were unsuitable for transplantation

Doctors from the Clinical University in Gdańsk carried out a pioneering procedure to regenerate the collected lungs to make them suitable for transplantation. The process takes place entirely outside the donor body. In the future, this may solve the problem of the lack of organs for the sick.

  1. Innovative lung perfusion treatment ex vivo was performed at the University Clinical Center in Gdańsk on January 25 this year.
  2. The initiator of the event was Dr. Wojciech Karolak from the Department of Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery of the University Clinical Center, who studied this method in Toronto
  3. This is the first procedure of this type in Poland. – This method is recognized and performed in the world – says Dr. Karolak

What is the perfusion method ex vivo, what is the professional name of the procedure? Lungs that were not originally suitable for transplantation are collected from the deceased donor and connected to a special apparatus that ventilates them and artificially transfers blood, and as a result regenerates the organ. This procedure takes four to six hours. After this time, it is assessed whether the organ will be suitable for reuse.

After examining the lungs, which were treated by Gdańsk doctors, it turned out that the organ, however, is not suitable for transplant due to too advanced changes in tissues. Currently, only about 10-15 percent. lungs in a multi-organ donation can be used for transplantation. As estimated by doctors, the use of a novel technique would make it possible to increase organ availability by up to 25%.

In the future, a similar method can be used, inter alia, for regeneration before liver, kidney or heart transplantation.

«In Poland, we have a very big problem with donors. In addition to all developing transplant programs, we need to provide a certain safeguard. Regeneration of organs through ex vivo perfusion is just such a safeguard » says Jakub Kraszewski, the managing director of UCK, quoted in the press release.
