A boy with three penises was born last year in the Iraqi city of Mosul. The first recorded human case of trifalia was recently reported in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.
A double penis affects one in about 5,5 million men. This anomaly, called difalia, was described in 1609 by Johannes Jacob Wecker. About 100 such cases have been described in the medical literature.
Trifali is incomparably less frequent. Until now, it has seemed to occur only in animals, and not necessarily in mammals.
Trifalia, or three penises
The parents of a 3-month-old boy – Kurds from Duhok in northern Iraq – brought him to the hospital after noticing a suspicious swelling of the scrotum, resembling a hydrocele. The examination revealed the presence of two under-developed penises. They were 1 and 2 cm respectively and had no urethra. One was at the base of the normal penis, the other below the scrotum.
Doctors decided that the optimal treatment would be to remove them. The procedure, performed by an experienced urologist, was not the easiest one, but it was a complete success. One-year follow-up after surgery confirmed no complications. The boy is developing properly.

The authors (Shakir S. Jabali and Ayad A. Mohammed) of the report published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports state that it is not known why the boy was born with triphalia. There were no genetic abnormalities in the family, and the mother did not take any medications during pregnancy that could cause abnormalities in the development of the fetus.
Two penises – what is life like with difalia?
Some time ago, the media wrote about a young “two-member” American who, thanks to the photos of his difalia, gained popularity in social media. A 23-year-old affected by this anomaly decided to show it to a wider audience and – under the pseudonym DiphallicDude – became an internet star in just a few hours.
Difalia – as this is the name given to this rare genetic defect – was first described in 1609. The doubling usually affects other organs of the lower body half as well. A person with difalia may have, for example, two anus, three kidneys, an extra leg, or spina bifida.
- Who needs two penises?
DiphallicDude received many questions from Internet users, and most of the questions were related to sex life. The man assured that both penises are fully functional – capable of both erection and ejaculation (both are equally involved in urination).
When asked about the biggest drawback of having two members, DiphallicDude replied that it was difficult to find comfortable underwear.
The American eagerly publishes photos of his genitals, but he categorically rejects proposals for appearing in pornographic films.
– In porn business, I would only be a temporary curiosity, besides, they pay poorly there. Besides, I would not be able to assess the value of my own dignity, argued DiphallicDude.
