Scientists have discovered a new way to predict a patient’s risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or even death from any of these diseases over the next four years. It’s a simple blood test. It is twice as accurate as the existing risk assessment methods. They are already used in the USA. What is it about?

  1. The developed blood test measures 27 specific proteins present in the plasma
  2. Scientists have found that they can determine the likelihood of developing a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, or death from disease in the next four years
  3. The possibilities offered by this method do not end there

The blood test will show what is happening in your organs, tissues, and cells

The blood test was developed by the team of Dr. Stephen Williams of the biotechnology firm SomaLogic in Boulder, Colorado. The results of the scientists’ work have been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

In a nutshell, the test consists of measuring 27 specific proteins present in the plasma. Scientists have found that they can determine the four-year probability of having a heart attack, heart failure, stroke or death. While genetic testing can provide an idea of a person’s risk of developing certain diseases, protein analysis can provide an accurate picture of what is currently going on in organs, tissues, and cells.

However, it started with the work that led to the discovery of these proteins. Dr. Williams and his colleagues tested plasma samples from 22849 people. 5 thousand. proteins from these samples. Using machine learning (a type of artificial intelligence that makes a system ‘learn’ through the use of data), scientists identified 27 protein signatures that together could predict the risk of cardiovascular disease mentioned above.

The effectiveness of this method was tested on a group of 11609 people. It turned out that the model developed by the team of Dr. Williams is roughly twice as accurate as existing CV risk assessments using age, gender, race, medical history, cholesterol, and blood pressure. It also turned out that the possibilities of detecting these 27 proteins are much greater.

A new challenge for medicine and another use of the blood test

The test can also accurately assess the risk of cardiovascular problems where predictions have been less accurate, such as those who have previously had a heart attack, stroke, or have additional illnesses and are taking medications to reduce the likelihood of complications.

«There would be no problem if everyone was the same. The trouble is that one patient will greatly reduce this risk by following treatment guidelines, while another will experience further problems over the next year, ‘notes Dr Williams, adding: those at risk of improved cardioprotective drugs. It is an unmet medical need ”.

Meanwhile, thanks to the greater accuracy of the new blood test, doctors could determine whether the drugs given to specific patients are effective enough in reducing the risk, or whether other drugs should be used. “I think finding an answer to the question of whether this particular person needs improved treatment, or when you treated someone or whether it actually worked, is the new frontier of personalized medicine” – said Dr. Stephen Williams in The Guardian.

The blood test can also be used to speed up the development of new cardiovascular drugs. All by providing faster ways to assess whether potential future drugs are performing well in clinical trials.
