Researchers at the Dana Faber Cancer Institute found that colon cancer survivors whose diets were rich in complex sugars and high carbohydrate products, were more likely to relapse than patients who were on a more balanced diet. These results support the conclusions of previous work that the risk of colorectal cancer could be reduced with a low-carbohydrate diet. Dr. Jeffrey Meyerhardt commented: our study certainly supports the idea that diet may influence the progression of colorectal cancer. Patients and clinicians should take this seriously when making post-treatment plans. Earlier work has also shown that colorectal cancer survivors whose diets and activity patterns led to increase in insulin levels in the blood, were at greater risk of relapse and death from the disease. A diet rich in refined sugars raises insulin levels as well “Nourishes” cancer cells.
