94 days in intensive care: the longest and most painful history of the fight against COVID-19, which ended in tragedy

The fact that coronavirus is not dangerous for the young and healthy is, unfortunately, not true. Even if the sick person is famous and wealthy. On July 6, Nick Cordero, a Broadway star who had been trying to overcome the coronavirus for three months, passed away.

41-year-old Broadway artist Nick Cordero has died after a long battle with coronavirus and complications from the disease. This was reported by the wife of a celebrity, Amanda Kluts: “I can’t believe it, it hurts so much. My heart is broken because I can’t imagine life without it. Nick was the light that illuminated everything around. He was a friend of everyone, he loved to communicate, listen, help. He was an incredible actor and musician. “

At the end of the emotional message, Amanda thanked the doctors who fought hard for the artist’s life. Unfortunately, the miracle did not happen, and even artificial ventilation and daily “cleaning” of the lungs did not help Nick.

Cordero was admitted to Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for the first time in March of this year. The man was hospitalized with pneumonia. And on March 31, Kluts announced that her beloved was in intensive care – it was difficult to breathe. Doctors who took the necessary tests diagnosed Nick with a coronavirus.

Initially, Cordero’s symptoms were “confused”: at home he could not get out of bed, was weak and lethargic, as if all his energy had been drained out of him. No cough, no fever … Seemingly normal stress or fatigue from work. However, he soon became sharply worse. After hospitalization, Nick was transferred to artificial lung ventilation.

“I love you. Now I will be unconscious, and I do not know when I will wake up and will be able to talk to you again, ”- the last thing that said Nick to Amanda.

Until April 10, the artist, who was plunged into a drug-induced coma, seemed to be on the mend. The indicators of his body stabilized, but then the unexpected happened. Doctors told Amanda Kluts that her husband needed an urgent operation. It turned out that due to the impact of the ventilator, blood stopped flowing into Nick’s right leg. The choice was cynically simple: either the man will breathe, or he will lose his leg. On April 18, doctors performed an amputation.

Unfortunately, only one trouble does not come: a few days later Nick contracted a lung infection.

Yes, by that time he had tested negative for coronavirus. And yes, his body was able to withstand a difficult operation, as a result of which he lost his leg. But due to a new disease, the man’s heart began to junk. Heartbeat every now and then disappeared, and he himself was literally between life and death.

On April 24, doctors installed a temporary pacemaker on Nick Cordero. “He was unconscious, his pulse could not be felt, he had to be urgently reanimated. I was very scared. The doctors barely got him back, ”Amanda shared that day. By the way, she was never allowed to see her husband. She received scant information about his condition from doctors.

Within 6 days, a new blow struck Kluts, who was forced to take care of her one-year-old son alone: the virus severely damaged Cordero’s lungs. Real holes formed in them, as if a smoker with 50 years of experience.

In an attempt to save the remains of the artist’s health, the specialists of the clinic performed a tracheotomy on him. This is the so-called throat section, an emergency operation for breathing disorders, one of the resuscitation methods. This seems to have helped.

2 weeks passed, and on May 12, the man came out of a medical coma.

He continued to suffer from breathing problems and felt, frankly, not very well. Despite the fact that doctors “cleaned” the lungs every day, Kluts told Instagram subscribers that her husband “was not getting better”.

In June, she met him for the first time in 80 days. Nick lost almost 30 kg, still could not speak and could barely open his mouth – he was so weak. But he could blink, and answered Amanda’s questions with his eyes. And so their short and crumpled last “conversation” passed.

Later, the woman explained that the plans were a double lung transplant, she could save the artist’s life and give hope for a relatively healthy existence. Those who were not indifferent even opened a fundraiser, but the collected money will no longer be needed. On July 6, Nick Cordero died.

Nick Cordero has played in TV series, starred in films and participated in productions on Broadway

“The coronavirus doesn’t care how healthy and young you are. He doesn’t care that you are “tired of wearing a mask.” And he doesn’t care how tired you are of observing the self-isolation regime. You just get infected – and the outcome of this disease is often unpredictable, ”wrote in the comments to Amanda’s post.

We condole with the family and friends of Nick Cordero.
