There is still debate about whether whiskey goes well with snacks. It has always been considered somewhat strange to eat food with whiskey. It is important to note that only residents of the United States considered this strange. For Europe and Asia, this was the norm.
Below are a number of products that pair perfectly with whiskey. They are selected based on the type of alcohol.
Cheese for whiskey
More suitable for whiskey with a smoky flavor. A hard blue cheese goes well with a spicier whiskey (Laphroaig). Goat cheese or brie, which is milder, will go well with a drink that has a sweet flavor (Glenmorangie).
Apple pie with whiskey
It looks like an odd pairing, but this delicious dessert goes great with a slightly sweet whiskey (Hankey Bannister Original). American bourbons also pair well with pie due to the caramel flavor of the alcohol.
Dark chocolate for whiskey
Whiskey and chocolate complement each other well. The best chocolate is dark chocolate: the higher the cocoa content, the better. Experiment to see which whiskey goes best with which bar. Orange-flavoured chocolate pairs with scotch with citrus notes. Dark chocolate without additives is suitable for strong whiskey (Ardbeg), milk chocolate is suitable for rye (Jim Beam). Single malt scotch (Aberlour) is paired with hazelnut flavored chocolate.
Fruit for whiskey
Something savory or tart like apples or pears will do. Try to stay away from citrus fruits. For example, oranges will block the taste of the drink.
Nuts and dried fruits for whiskey
The choice of nuts should be approached carefully. Serve heavily roasted nuts with smoky whiskey. Strong peaty whiskeys (Johnnie Walker Red Label) pair with sweeter nuts, while sweet whiskey pairs with bitter fruits.
Seafood for whiskey
Oysters, mussels, shrimp, any of the above can be offered with whiskey with spicy or herbal notes (Ballantines). There will be no extra greens and lemon sauce.
Smoked salmon with whiskey
This delicious fish pairs well with a high rye whiskey (Bulleit Rye). The smoky salmon flavor gives the bourbon a fruity, spicy taste.
Grilled steak with whiskey
There’s nothing better than a big, juicy grilled steak. This is a win-win. The rich smoky whiskey flavor (Johnnie Walker) complements the beef. But you will have to spend a little time choosing meat depending on the amount of fat and seasonings for it. Alternatively, a more tender steak goes well with bourbon (Maker’s 46).
Meatloaf for whiskey
In combination with barbecue sauce, it will be a wonderful snack for strong whiskey. The spicy notes and high alcohol content of full-bodied whiskeys, such as rye or single malt, pair well with rich dishes like meatloaf.
Advice from Shake
Do not serve light snacks like boiled meat, fish or vegetable salads so that the whiskey does not seem harsh against their background.
