Probably everyone has seen the adaptation of detective stories about Hercule Poirot starring David Suchet. Series about Miss Marple have been shown on Russian television more than once. But according to the books of the “Queen of the Detective”, other serial films worthy of your attention were also shot. We talk about them on the birthday of Agatha Christie.
1. Trial of Innocence (UK, 2018)
One of the Russian-language versions of the title of this book is Woe to the Innocent. A subtle psychologist and connoisseur of human souls, Agatha Christie touched on a very important topic. How do the relations of the participants in the detective drama develop if the killer is not found? What happens between people if they live suspecting each other?
Feedback from fans of the writer’s work about this series is contradictory. Someone appreciated the adaptation of the script, the excellent acting and the work of the director. Someone is disappointed that the creators of the project have not changed the plot and the ending of the story enough. To understand who is right, you should look and make your own opinion. Do not be upset if you perfectly remember who the killer is. It is not the “result” that is more important here, but the pleasure of the viewing process. The actors really managed to convey the nuances of the complex relationships of the characters.
2. And there were none (UK, 2015)
When it became known that the BBC film company bought the rights to screen seven works of Agatha Christie, and fans of English detective stories froze in anticipation. The novel “Ten Little Indians” received a politically correct new name. However, the plot remains the same. But the picture is extremely pleasant and will definitely appeal to those who are attentive to details.
3. Alphabet Murders (UK, 2018)
We again find ourselves in the past, now it is the thirties of the twentieth century. Hercule Poirot investigates mysterious murders in alphabetical order. But the modern turn of this story is now filled with deep psychologism, naturalistic details and other ambiguous additions. But the visualization is impeccable, as is the performance of the actors – John Malkovich and Rupert Grint (who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films).
4. Pale Horse (UK, 2020)
In the modern interpretation, “White Horse Villa” (that is the name of the book) looks somewhat unusual. However, whatever you do to beat a well-known old plot in a new way. A series of mysterious murders of people, at first glance, with each other in no way connected, confuses the police. As always with Agatha Christie, the solution is unexpected.
5. The Mysterious Murders of Agatha Christie (France, Switzerland, 2009)
French comedy series based on the works of Christie, in which you will not see either Poirot or Miss Marple. But there are other heroes: a self-satisfied snob – a police commissioner, a nervous inspector, a naive assistant, a sly journalist. The creators of this sitcom are very free with plots, ironic over the usual clichés and sometimes bring situations to the point of absurdity. Healthy laughter is guaranteed to the audience!
6. The Agatha Christie Hour (UK, 1982)
A small English television series based on the stories of Agatha Christie – somewhat naive for today’s viewer, but not without old-fashioned charm. In some episodes, the hero of Agatha Christie appears, who in English-speaking countries is no less popular than the legendary Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot: Mr. Parker Pine. He is a private consultant who gives advice on how to become happy, and at the same time investigates mysterious stories.
7. Partners in Crime (UK, 2015)
A film adaptation of the novels about the spouses Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, former secret agents, and now private detectives. The action takes place in the fifties of the last century, and the atmosphere of that time is recreated in the way that British filmmakers are perfectly able to do.
8. There were ten (France, 2020)
In the French TV series based on the book Ten Little Indians, the action takes place in the present day. The story of mysterious murders on a wild island is somewhat reminiscent of “Lost” (Lost) and the show “The Last Hero”. In addition to the plot, there is not much left of the work of Agatha Christie, but all the flaws of the screenwriter more than pay off with a beautiful “picture” and acting in the most dramatic scenes.
