On June 18, many countries around the world celebrate Harmony Day. How to stay happy regardless of external circumstances today and every day, says a medical psychologist.
The Greek word “harmony” meant integrity, coherence. Speaking of harmony in life, we mean the right balance between the body and consciousness, the outer and inner worlds, between all the components of our existence.
Harmony Day was first celebrated in 1987 as part of the international relay race “Running for Good” in more than a hundred countries. In today’s constantly changing realities, the concept of harmony is especially relevant. Therefore, the holiday dedicated to her should be devoted to self-knowledge and inner work in search of balance.
Meanwhile, I will tell you how to be in a state of rest not only for one day, but for most of your life.
Treat your body like a temple
Harmony is impossible without physical health. Choose only healthy foods and eat when you are really hungry. Give at least a few minutes a day to physical activity, and your body will thank you.
If you have contraindications to sports, then daily walks in the fresh air will bring great benefits. Pleasant physical fatigue will supersede mental experiences.
Get rid of everything unnecessary
It is simply impossible to let something new into your life if there is no place for it. Throwing away old things that you do not use, you will make room for internal and external changes.
Learn to slow down
Use the Stop, Breathe, Listen practice to learn how to live in the here and now. Slow down, even out your breathing, listen carefully to it, and then to the sounds around you.
Ask yourself: “Where am I now?” This question will help bring you back to the present moment when thoughts drift into the past or you begin to worry about the future.
Follow the “threshold rule”
Crossing the threshold of the office, do the work as responsibly and conscientiously as possible. Crossing the threshold of the house, forget about all work duties and worries. How important this method is, I realized when I started working with dying patients.
Faced with a serious illness, many people realize that they did not live at all. Spinning in the cycle of work and everyday affairs, forgetting how interesting and multifaceted life can be. In this race, it is difficult to understand what you really want, what gives you pleasure.
When we follow the “threshold rule”, we learn to pay attention to everything around us and live in the present, not focusing on a career.
Learn to see the good in everything
If you can change something in an unpleasant situation, change it, if not, accept it. Find positive, profitable sides for you, shift the focus on them.
Remember to write down every day what gave you pleasure, even if it was a minor event. This practice will help you realize that there is a lot of beauty in your life.
Make time for yourself
Without this, inner harmony is impossible. Often we live as if according to someone else’s scenario, trying to meet the expectations of others. We do it “how we want it,” not “how we want it.”
Immersed in work, household and family affairs, we forget about ourselves. Remember the principle of “burn, but don’t burn” and make time for personal interests. This is important, because in these moments you ask yourself the question: “What exactly do I want?”
Spend at least an hour or two a day alone with yourself or do what you love in the company of like-minded people.
“Change and change, leave and let go”
If you don’t like something about yourself, make a plan to change it. There is no need to be ashamed and close: each of us is unique, remember this and learn to accept your own characteristics.
“Leaving and letting go” means being honest with yourself, understanding what you want and who you like to be around. Change your unloved job for one that inspires you, communicate with those who are really interesting.
The ability to follow your true desires is the best way to maintain inner balance, as well as feel happy and fulfilled.
