7 secrets on how to fit everything you need in a small bathroom
Small, but remote! How to make a 3-4 square meter bathroom stylish and spacious? Alena Podmasco, stylist of Leroy Merlin, helped Wday.ru to understand this.
“There is not much truth in pictured interiors: huge floor-to-ceiling windows, gracefully rolled towels, a freestanding bathtub and palm trees are fantasies that only aim to inspire readers. Often in our bathrooms we have to choose between a small bathtub or a small shower stall. Limited space is the main aspect to consider when choosing a design. But even on 3 square meters you can create your dream bathroom! “
Take advantage of the space under the sink
At the stage of renovation, it is worth giving preference to a sink without a pedestal, which is attached directly to the wall. It is easy to fit into even the tightest room, and you can always install a washing machine, bedside table or laundry basket in the vacant space under the sink.
So that the furniture does not visually eat up the space and looks light, stop at the option with a hanging cabinet without legs, an open rack or with simple shelves. Do you live in a rented apartment, where you can’t get away from a sink with a pedestal? You can purchase a round shelf to frame the sink leg.
Such an accessory will definitely not take up much space. It can be placed next to the sink, put on the washing machine, or installed over the toilet, after removing several lower bars. You can store towels on the stairs, and for greater functionality, hooks, hinged containers and shelves can be attached to the crossbars, on which shower gels, creams, rolled towels or candles are conveniently located.
Hang a shelf above the door
To make the shelf above the door as invisible as possible, match the color to the ceiling and try to make it deeper, like grandma’s mezzanine. What should be stored on it? You can put wicker baskets with household chemicals on it. This solution will be extremely useful for a family with small children. Young researchers often want to taste everything, but they are unlikely to be able to reach such a shelf!
Choose a shower instead of a bath
Assess your rhythm of life. What is more important for you: lie down for an hour or two in the bath or take a quick contrast shower? If you are an active person and the story with “souring” is not at all about you, you should think about replacing the bathtub with a shower enclosure or a cabin, and use the vacant space for a washing machine, which it was already decided to put in the kitchen.
The shower enclosure will fit into any bathroom design. You can independently choose the type of shower head, mixer, height and material for the tray, and even install a rain shower. In such a corner, you can pick up stylish shelves for storing shampoos and accessories. However, it should be borne in mind that the shower enclosure can only be installed in a bathroom with waterproofed walls and floors and lined with waterproof materials (tiles, porcelain stoneware, mosaics).
If you are not sure how well the walls and floors are waterproofed, or you live in a wooden house, a shower cabin is the ideal solution. It is easy to install and dismantle, and you do not have to suffer with the selection of accessories.
Use vertical storage
For several years now, not only vertical photos and videos on Instagram have been very popular, but also the principle of vertical storage. It was brought into fashion by the Japanese woman Marie Kondo. The idea is to keep only those things that bring joy, fold them into compact rectangles or rollers, arrange them into categories and colors, and store them vertically. Things that you haven’t used for a long time are better off getting rid of, and arguments like “this is memory” will not work here. Wonderful memories will not disappear even if you part with their physical embodiment.
Try a vertical system in your bathroom. For example, install two bars on the door parallel to each other and fold the rolled towels between them.
All hygiene products can be placed not in the closet, but in a stylish niche next to the bathroom, in the shower corner, above the sink or toilet. For a small bathroom, a shallow niche with two compartments will be enough. For a narrow wall, it is better to make a horizontal depression, which visually lengthens it. Shelves can be glass, wood or plastic. The niche can be decorated with seashells brought from the sea and scented candles.
Are you afraid that household chemicals for cleaning the house and all kinds of rags will look ridiculous in niches? Instead of tiling the bathtub, try hiding the support structure under the screen and placing cleaning supplies behind it. Don’t feel like climbing under the bathroom looking for the right product? Choose a stylish display with open shelves.
Don’t forget about the side walls of the furniture
The side walls of furniture and the washing machine are also valuable space. Hooks, small shelves or a hair dryer holder can be attached to them on double-sided tape. Your favorite massage brush, hand towel or makeup organizer will be perfect for hiding here.
