7 scientific reasons why plants should be in your home

Experts say that flowers in an apartment make us healthier and happier.

“To live, you need the sun, freedom and a small flower,” said the great storyteller Hans Christian Andersen. How much he is right is confirmed by modern scientific research. Freedom is one of the basic human needs. Sunlight makes us happier and is vital to our physical and mental health. Plants, as it turned out, also perform a more important function than just decorating the house.

“Sustainable design is beneficial to health,” says Erin Largo-White, Ph.D., assistant professor of public health at the University of North Florida. “Adding natural elements to the interior improves the quality of life.”

1. Reduce stress

According to the results of numerous surveys, one in four women experiences stress several times a day. 30 percent of us have at least once a day, but troubles do happen. And so scientists started an experiment: they found out if there are simple ways to relieve stress. The results showed that small gifts like scented candles reduced stress levels by about half, and flowers by three-quarters. “The heart rejoices,” women say about their emotions from the contemplation of flowering plants.

2. Improve mood

By the way, this is a great life hack for men – a bouquet is guaranteed to cheer up a woman, even if she has a mess all day. Experts believe that this is the mechanism of nature’s influence on a woman: receiving flowers, she becomes not only happier, but also healthier. To the experts’ words, we add that it would be nice to attach some other trinket like a ringlet or a plane ticket to the bouquet.

3. Calm down men

Yes, men are also easily influenced by plants. And, although they will carefully hide it, many people like to grow flowers themselves. Scientists say that it is a pleasure for men to watch the plant grow and develop, and to know that it is their handiwork. By the way, they like receiving flowers as a gift no less than women.

4. Strengthen relationships

It turns out that being near indoor flowers increases the ability of people to be compassionate, a desire to help, and to show concern. In addition, the level of empathy grows, it becomes easier for us to understand each other. And mutual understanding is the basis of any strong relationship.

5. Improves memory

In 2005, Rutgers conducted a study examining how plants affect memory in people over 55. It turned out that those who regularly care for houseplants – who have them at all – had a better episodic memory than those who do not keep flowers at home. Scientists believe that plants are able to activate the regions of our brain that are responsible for memory. Perhaps the point is in the aroma, or maybe in the positive emotions that plants awaken in people. The main thing is that the result is obvious.

6. Helps Sleep Better

Only the lazy has not heard about the magical properties of lavender, but this does not make them less magical. It is a scientifically established fact that people who inhale the lavender scent before going to bed sleep better and wake up more refreshed and energetic in the morning. Agree, the simplest life hack! By the way, if you don’t like lavender, scientists have invented a bunch of space gadgets that help you get enough sleep.

7. Accelerate recovery

And not from a cold, but after operations. Scientists studied people who were recovering from surgery in one of the American hospitals. It turned out that those who had flowers in the ward recovered faster: the pressure was more stable, the pain was less frequent, the level of anxiety decreased, and they did not get tired so quickly.

Bonus: flowers make you sexier

In 2010, they conducted a funny study: women were shown photos of handsome men, some of whom were sitting in rooms with empty vases, others in rooms filled with flowers. The latter invariably turned out to be more attractive to women. In another experiment, a man met women at a mall. He asked for phones from 600 ladies, and those to whom he approached at the flower shop turned out to be more agreeable.
