7 mistakes due to which the tonometer overestimates the pressure

Every adult needs to regularly monitor the level of blood pressure. This recommendation is given by all doctors without exception. It is no secret that diseases of the cardiovascular system are the leading cause of death worldwide. Knowing the indicators of blood pressure, you can detect a deterioration in well-being in time and take the necessary measures.

However, you need to use the tonometer correctly. Measurement errors can be fatal.

To prevent them, you need to follow the recommendations from the American Heart Association:

  1. Before taking measurements, you need to go to the toilet. If the bladder is full, then plus 10-15 points to the final indicators will be provided.

  2. Feet should be on the floor, not on weight. Your back should be leaning on the back of the chair. If the pose is taken incorrectly, then this will add 6-10 points to the total values.

  3. The hand on which the cuff of the device is located must be on a flat surface. You can’t keep it upright.

  4. Crossed legs can add 2 to 8 points.

  5. It is recommended to put on the cuff on the skin without clothes. Depending on the thickness of the fabric, it can add 5 to 50 points.

  6. What matters is the size of the cuff. If it is small, then the level of blood pressure will be lower by 2-10 points.

  7. During the measurement, you need to be motionless. You shouldn’t even talk. Otherwise, the indicators will be higher by 10 values.

According to statistics, home blood pressure monitors are wrong in 70% of cases. Most often, incorrect data is received by men. To minimize the likelihood of error, you need to follow the advice of experts.
